The Kansas City Royals - A Story of Hope and Focus.
|
Our hometown Royals are now 2-0 against Toronto in the American League Championship Series. Regardless of the outcome of this series, the inspiring story is how the Royals came from behind in game 4 of the preceding series against the Houston Astros in an elimination game with the Royals down 2 games to 1, playing in Houston and 4 runs behind in the 8th inning. Statisticians and computers showed that the Royals had less than a 3% chance of winning that game. What do you think is the reason for this extraordinary comeback? Was it because they had high hopes, luck, or determination?
I don't think so. Instead, I offer two explanations for this extraordinary comeback. The first I will call "experience based hope". The Royals were in a similar situation one year ago in an elimination game against Oakland and were also 4 runs behind in the 8th inning and again had less than a 3% chance of winning. I believe that extraordinary comeback experience of 2014 gave them the "experience based hope" that they could defy the odds again.
I suggest the second explanation is "focus". Prior to the 8th inning against Houston, the Royals were unsuccessfully trying to match the power hitters of the Astros. Then in the 8th inning the Royals returned to and focused on "small ball" which had been the style that had made them so successful during the regular season. In the 8th inning, they became patient at the plate and hit 5 straight singles rather than trying to overpower the ball. By focusing on their strengths of "small ball" and speed, the Royals defied the odds.
