Thomas Edison's Early Childhood

Thomas was the youngest of seven children born to Nancy Edison. Several of his siblings were so sick that they passed away at young ages. Thomas was also sickly, was born with a serious hearing defect, and suffered scarlet fever. His hearing worsened. Seven year old Thomas asked a lot of questions in school. His teacher considered him to be hyperactive and disruptive to the class. After only 12 weeks of schooling the teacher and the school gave up on him and said he couldn't learn.

Nancy Edison's Decision

Nancy disagreed with the school and made the decision to school him herself. This was an unselfish decision given the demands of raising the rest of her family, including his ill siblings. Nancy nurtured Thomas and read to him. She gave him the freedom to learn in his own style and encouraged his curiosity to read. She believed in her son.

Thank You to Nancy Edison

Without Nancy it's highly doubtful that any of us would know the name Thomas Edison. Tonight when you turn on a light in your home, you can thank Nancy. The next time you go to a movie, you can thank Nancy. The next time you listen to a record, you can thank Nancy.

Exercise

This week I invite you to reflect on the following:

1. Think about someone who inspired and/or believed in you. It could be a parent or other relative, teacher, coach, minister or other religious figure, your employer, friend, or neighbor.

2. To what or to whom do you attribute your accomplishments?

3. Write down all the qualities of a mother that you know of, that has inspired, motivated, and encouraged you or someone else to become a success.

4. Do you know someone who is unaware of or not pursuing his or her special talents? Could you encourage that person to confidently pursue his or her talent by declaring your belief in him or her and by being a mentor?

I'd be happy to have a conversation and discuss this with you. Please call me 816-213-0125.

"My mother was the making of me. She was so true, so sure of me; and I felt I had something to live for, someone I must not disappoint."

Thomas Alva Edison,

American Inventor (1847-1931)
