Do results really matter?

This is the fourth in a series on Motivation.

Dear ,

Welcome to Issue 323.  The mission of "Marvelous Mondays" is to offer an inspirational thought, a practical exercise, some humor, or a simple tip to jump-start your week and to enhance your life, business, outlook or relationships.

Please feel free to forward "Marvelous Mondays" to others who will enjoy it. Did you miss a previous issue? Click here.

Must you be able to measure it?

An accepted business cliche says if you can't measure something then it's not important. Susan Fowler in her book "Why Motivating People Doesn't Work...And What Does" challenges this concept. In fact, she asserts that often the very things that cannot be measured are in fact the most important.

Do results matter?

While it is clear that employees can obtain the results that are expected of them, Susan Fowler asserts that-achieving results is not enough and cannot be sustained or repeated if the psychological needs of the employee are not met. Click here for Issue 320, which discuss the three psychological needs of connection, competence, and autonomy. Susan Fowler asserts that it is far more important to determine why the team member wanted the results and how they went about achieving it. It is not just about obtaining results.

Exercise

1. Think of a project that you're doing at work, at home, or in an organization, that gives you great pleasure. Is it measurable or does it give you a feeling of well being or appreciation?

2. Think about a project at work, at home, or in an organization where certain results are expected. As you go about this project, consider why you do it, your personal goals, and then how do you go about achieving it?
