"DIFFERENT IS BETTER THAN BETTER"

In today's competitive marketplace, many businesses and service providers are concentrating their efforts on being better than their competitors. Does that make sense? It might seem to make sense, but Sally Hogshead, author of "How the World Sees You" says that being "different is better than better." If your product or services are basically the same as your competitors, you can lose your customers or clients to someone who copies your product, cuts the price, offers an incentive, or in some other way entices your customers. In short, you can easily be replaced.

ARE YOU DIFFERENT?

Absolutely yes! Do you believe it? I assert that you have at least one characteristic, quality, or strength that distinguishes you. Here's a three-step process on the subject of differentness:

1. FIND your differentness.

2. FORMULATE what makes you different.

3. FORWARD that message.

EXERCISE

This week's exercise will focus on finding your differentness. I invite you to spend a few minutes doing the following:

1. Ask a customer or client why they choose to do business with you and what distinguishes you. Have them summarize what distinguishes you in 3 to 5 adjectives.

2. Ask a member of your organization what distinguishes you and draws customers or clients to you. Have them summarize what distinguishes you in 3 to 5 adjectives.

3. Ask a friend or someone who knows you well to describe what is different about you that has made you successful. Have them summarize what distinguishes you in 3 to 5 adjectives.

I would appreciate getting feedback from you. Let me know how this exercise helped you.
