MOTIVATION - WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

In our last issue (click here) we discussed some misconceptions about benefits of procrastination. Today we focus on motivation. I assert that you need motivation to prevent or halt procrastination. Here are some of the benefits of going into action instead of procrastinating:

PRAISE - Receiving praise for a job timely completed boosts our self-esteem.

RESPECT - We gain the respect of our coworkers, supervisors, and others in authority

RESPONSIBILITY - We increase our chances for more responsible projects.

PROMOTION - Getting things done on time increases the possibility for promotion.

RAISE - The potential for raise in salary is increased.

RELIEF - Getting the job done on time relieves you from your own self-criticism and stress and relieves you from pressure from others.

CELEBRATE - Plan ahead for a celebration for when you have completed the task.

EXERCISE

This week I invite you to:

  1. Take a big project and break it into small parts. Do the first part this week.
  2. Notice your feelings of accomplishment and the release of pressure just by starting.
  3. Choose someone to hold you accountable to complete the project.
  4. Give someone specific praise for completing a project and notice their reaction.
  5. Plan a celebration (it doesn't have to be expensive or dramatic) when you complete the project.
