Slow Down With Each Breath
In our last issue (click here) we discussed how to "slow down" and become more aware by just taking one more minute. Today we're expanding the concept of mindfulness of being aware of our very breath.
Mindfulness Reduces Stress
Results from the Stanford study show that those who practice mindfulness meditation for 8 weeks had a decrease of the activation in the AMYGDALA, which is the region of the brain that lights up under stress and anxiety. The participants reported less worrying and less anxiety and less self-put downs. In short, their self-esteem improved. Research shows that by practicing mindfulness we actually construct neural pathways between the AMYGDALA and the pre-frontal cortex (the part of the brain that calms us and organizes information).
Mindfulness
This is a state of being in the here and now - being fully present (aware). Mindfulness is a mirror thought. It is a nonjudgmental observation that reflects only what is presently happening and in exactly the way it is happening.
Exercise
1.     Breathing. I invite you to do this breathing exercise.
  • Sit upright in a chair with eyes closed.
  • Observe your breathing at the beginning, middle, and end of each breath. Do you notice any difference?
  • Repeat this 10 times.
  • Notice how you feel.
2.     Mindful Walking.
  • Walk slowly for just 3 minutes.
  • Pay attention to your heel, ball of foot, and toes.
Please share with me your results by simply replying to this email or call me 816-213-0125.
