FIGHT OR FLIGHT RESPONSE
|
|
This is an automatic response when we perceive something or someone as dangerous, such as confronting the saber-toothed tiger. This sets off various chemical reactions in our body, but they last only about a minute.

HEALTH CONSEQUENCES TO THE AGGRESSOR'S TARGET
|
|
Now, let's switch to the more common experience of an aggressive behavior of a person. When this behavior is frequent and directed against a person in the workplace or in a personal relationship, this can set off chemical reactions that can cause health consequences that can last much longer than the typical fight or flight response.
Some physiological reactions can be seen or felt. Others may not be as apparent. The following are some reactions that can occur.
-Increased blood sugar
-Increased cortisol
-Increased blood pressure
-Increased heart rate
-Digestion and metabolism problems
-Weight gain/weight loss
-Stomach cramps
-Tightening of muscles
-Perspiration
-Suppression of the immune system, leading to more colds and illness
-Sleep disruption/disorder
-Skin rashes
-Increases susceptibility to eating disorders and mental disorders
-Causes hair to stand on end
