HEALING POWER OF POETRY

Maya Angelou dealt with her childhood traumas by reading literature and poetry.  This became a therapy which enabled her to regain her voice, which had been silent for five years.  Maya's love and passion for poetry inspired her to become a poet and fortified her though life's challenges.

EXCERPTS FROM STILL I RISE

"You may write me down in history, with your bitter, twisted lies,

You may trod me in the very dirt, but still, like dust, I'll rise

"Out of the huts of history's shame - I rise

up from a past that's rooted in pain - I rise

"I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear - I rise

into a daybreak that's wondrously clear - I rise

Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,

I am the dream and the hope of the slave.

I rise I rise I rise.

-Maya Angelou

Although she suffered many hardships in her life, Maya continued to rise above it all.  Her life's journey gives us inspiration, motivation, and hope.

EXERCISE

This week I invite you to reflect on the following:

  1. Who in your life has been an example of "rising"?

  2. Reflect on a time in your life when you chose to "rise".

  3. What part of your life is calling you to "rise"?
