SHORT REFLECTION OF MAYA ANGELOU

We are all deeply saddened by the passing of Maya Angelou.  Today we offer a tribute to her.

The Silence of Her Early Years.  A childhood of abuse and suffering caused her such trauma that she stopped speaking for 5 long years.

Education.  High school graduate.

Talents:  Actress, dancer, singer, author of 30 books, poet, screenplay writer, composer, editor, master of 6 languages, and teacher.

Trailblazer. First African American woman to write a screenplay (called Georgia, Georgia) that was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.  Although she never attended college, she was called a college professor and received 30 honorary degrees.

Courage.  A victim of racism herself, she was an effective advocate for civil rights and was selected by Dr. Martin Luther King  to serve as Northern Coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

QUOTES
Courage.  "I think courage is the most important of of all virtues.  Without courage you can't practice any other virtue consistently.  You can be anything erratically - generous, kind.  Without courage, people can shame you and blame you."  Maya Angelou

Never Underestimate.  "There are people you will meet once and never again, but don't underestimate anything. You meet somebody on the bus or at the supermarket, and you think they will never have any impact on your life. But don't underestimate."  Maya Angelou

How She Lived Her Life: "What stands out to me most about Maya Angelou is not what she has done or written or spoken, it's how she lived her life.  She moved through the world with unshakable calm, confidence and a fierce grace."  Oprah Winfrey

"When you get, give. When you learn, teach."

-Maya Angelou's grandmother

Maya's grandmother was an inspiration to her and influenced her dedication to learning and teaching.
