DELIBERATE PRACTICE

In Issue 276 we discussed the concept of Deliberate Practice, the value of a designed activity, and feedback from an experienced coach.

TICHY'S THREE CIRCLES

Today we explore the work of Noel Tichy, former chief of General Electric's famous Crotonville Management Development Center.  Tichy, now a professor at the University of Michigan, takes a closer look at designed activities and illustrates his principle as follows:

  •  Comfort Zone.  Most of us tend to spend a lot of our designed activities in the comfort zone, either unconsciously by habit or as part of our job description.  The problem in this zone is that we already do it easily, so it's actually designed to keep us from growing or learning.
  • Panic Zone.  Designed activity in this zone usually is unsuccessful and extremely frustrating.  It's so difficult that we don't even know where to begin.
  • Learning Zone.  This is the zone for growth and progress.  The designed activity requires knowledge, skills, or abilities that are just out of our reach.  Identifying what is our own comfort zone, learning zone, or panic zone is seldom simple because we can't be objective.  The same is true in identifying the zone of persons on our team.
  • Fluctuating.  In some situations it can only take a few short minutes to move in and out of the zones.

EXERCISE

This week I invite you to reflect on the following:

  1. Is your comfort zone circle or that of a team member too big?
  2. Do you find yourself or someone on your team to be in the panic zone too often or too long?
  3. What are benefits of developing the skills to move into different zones?

I'd like to know your opinion on the Tichy Theory.  Do you agree?

Would you like to design a deliberate practice for you and/or a team member to move into and expand your LEARNING ZONE and/or to get out of the panic zone faster? As a business performance coach, I have the skills, experience, and proven assessment tools to help you make this happen.  I'll be happy to assist you.  Just call me soon at 816-213-0125.  Let's talk.
