CONTINUATION FROM LAST WEEK
|
In the last issue I shared with you the crossroad I was at in my life. I had no money and no job; and I wanted to marry my beautiful Natalie, who was named after Natalie Woods. Finding a fulfilling career was crucial, and I needed to find my real purpose in life. Since none of my jobs in the past had worked, I decided I had to make a bold move.

MY PURPOSE IN LIFE
|
This was a very stressful but also reflective time in my life. Have you ever seen the 30 second J & J commercial (Link) where a male nurse lovingly helps a child get her shot? Suddenly, it dawned on me that the nurse in the commercial was the essence of the person I wanted to be. I've always admired people in the health care services but had automatically rejected any thoughts in that direction because of my old nemeses, math and science. Still, the thought of being a registered nurse excited me. How could I accomplish that? I would have to go back and take college science courses and score a perfect 4.0 to be admitted into nursing school. Additionally the rigorous nursing school curriculum required physics, chemistry, biology, microbiology, and laboratory work. I also would need to find a job so that I could marry Natalie and start a family. This would require a bold move.

KEVIN IS ACCEPTED INTO NURSING SCHOOL & BEYOND
|
I returned to college to take the prerequisite science courses. Guess what? I failed physics! But I persevered in my second attempt and scored an A. I did well in the other courses and was accepted into nursing school. I successfully completed all my courses while holding an outside job and became a Registered Nurse. I was thrilled!
With my new confidence, I decided I wanted even more, so I applied and was accepted into the Nurse Practitioner's program. Of course, it was a strenuous and lengthy program. Once again I succeeded and last year received my certification as a Nurse Practitioner. I am very happy to be helping my patients in a caring environment in an outstanding Milwaukee retirement home.

REFLECTIONS ON TALENT & POSITIVISM
|
In nursing school I made the decision to replace negative self-talk with positivism. I chose to believe that I had talent. I discovered that my mind could work in ways I never imagined. I learned that I had an unlimited supply of talents.

KEVIN'S ADVICE FOR ALL OF US
|
Change is not easy. You can't become the person you want to be by taking an easy path. You can't let fear or feelings of inadequacy turn you away from exploring the entire capacity of your human gifts or your unlimited talents. Your employer, your career path, and your education may help you, but they can also limit you.
Of course, it's human nature to focus on your gifts. However, I believe you should continue to search for any latent talents to assist you in fully developing as a human being. Otherwise, you could find yourself stuck in a box.
To those of you who are parents and educators, I ask you to keep in mind that a child has unlimited talents and that you have a great opportunity to uncover those talents while still recognizing their more obvious gifts.

EXERCISE
| This week I invite you to reflect on the following:- Do you know a teen or a college student that is being distracted away from their hidden talents?
-
As a leader do you underestimate the value and talents of your employees?
-
As a parent do you underestimate the talents of your children?
- As a leader, parent, or friend, is there anyone in your life who needs more of a challenge, whether or not they think they have a particular talent? Are you giving them the necessary encouragement?
As a business and life coach I have proven techniques to help persons discover their latent talents. I have the experience and will be happy to assist you. Invest in yourself. You are worth it! Just pick up the phone 816-213-0125.
