THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION - DAVID VS. GOLIATH

Of course any discussion of the American Revolution must involve the name George Washington, the military commander of the underdogs. He was pitted against the greatest empire of its day which was lead by another George, King George III.

We discussed in issue 265 how our soldiers used "David" guerrilla tactics in victories over the British. Today we will discuss other "David" ways that helped the Colonies attain victory.

DIVISION IN THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT

The oppressive acts, including the Tax Act and the Stamp Act, passed by Parliament were causes of our revolution, since the colonials rejected Parliament's authority. As war dragged on well beyond the time period the British expected it, many prominent members of Parliament lost their zeal for the war. Some of the reasons were:

  • The enormous financial strain of the cost of the war.
  • The enormous strain on the British military which was diverted away from arch enemy France.
  • Some members of Parliament thought we had a right to rebel.
  • Some members of Parliament and other British didn't really care whether we attained freedom.
  • Some wondered why they were killing their "own brothers", a reference to the ties and history between England and their blood line that was now in the colonies.
EXERCISES

EXERCISES/LESSONS FOR "UNDERDOG" DAVIDS IN 2014

In your business or company, do you consider yourself a "David"/George Washington? Do you feel yourself totally outmatched as the underdog in competing against a larger and hugely financed company (a Goliath)?

If so, look at your Mission Statement. Does it give you an advantage? Do you have a unity of purpose in your organization? Is your Mission Statement passionate and reflective of your values?

Have you been thinking of revising it?

QUESTIONS FOR "GOLIATHS" IN 2014
  1. Is your business or company like the British Empire or Goliath?
  2. Do you believe that your organization totally outmatches the "Davids" out there? If so, do you think you have a false sense of security?
  3. Is there a divisiveness within your organization or a lack of unified purpose that could topple you?
  4. What is your Mission Statement? Is it passionate? Is it up to date?
  5. Is there unity at all levels of your organization?

I regularly coach individuals and organizations in formulating Mission Statements that are personal and powerful. This allows them to achieve even greater success. I am available to assist you, so just pick up the phone or email me and we can discuss. johngordoncoach@yahoo.com
