SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND THE BODY

Last week we discussed the consequences to the brain. Today we look at the consequences of sleep deprivation to the body.

RICCARDO MUTI

Let's look at Riccardo Muti, the famous ChicagoRicardo Muti Image

Symphony Orchestra music director. Stress and sleep deprivation caused his doctor to order a month-long rest.

Sometimes doctors even have to hospitalize their patients.

Can any of us afford a sudden leave from our responsibilities for one month?

THE BODY'S REACTION TO SLEEP DEPRIVATION

Sleep and stress research at the University of Chicago, the Northwestern Memorial

Hospital Center for Integrated Medicine, and John's Hopkins Medical Institute indicates exhaustion

and sleep loss:

  • Can cause reflux, heartburn, and stomach problems.
  • Can reduce serotonin which in turn causes insomnia.

  • Can be a risk factor for a heart attack.

  • Can cause many other health problems.

EXERCISE

This week I invite you to do the following:

  1. Examine whether you are getting enough sleep. If you are, congratulations and please consider sharing your good sleeping tips with someone. And of course, I'd like to hear from you.
  2. If you are not getting enough sleep, I invite you to list 3 benefits

you will receive by getting more sleep each day.

  3. If you are not getting enough sleep, I invite you to commit to getting 45 min more sleep twice in the next week.

"There is plenty of compelling evidence that sleep is the most important predictor on how long you will live.  Perhaps it is more important than whether you smoke, exercise or have high blood pressure or cholesterol levels."
