GRATITUDE DEFINED

Gratitude comes from the Latin "gratitudo". I am defining gratitude as a quality, a feeling, and an attitude of readiness to be thankful.

GRATITUDE AND THE BIG PAYOFF

Martin Seligman is a well known researcher on the issues of stress and gratitude. His research shows that people who are grateful are less stressed and more happy. In fact, he concludes that gratitude may be one of the most important predictors of happiness. Happiness is a goal we all have.

GOOD NEWS-GRATITUDE CAN BE LEARNED

Here's welcome news. Research in the field of positive psychology shows that gratitude can be learned. So let's begin the learning right now.

TRIPLE DOSE YOUR GRATITUDE

In her personal empowerment book "8 to Great", MK Mueller recommends the daily practice of writing down 3 gratitude statements-one for the past, one for the present, and one for the future.

Today we focus on the first gratitude statement which deals with the past.  Here are examples:

"I am so grateful that I went to school at ________".

"I am so grateful to have my life long friends".

"I am so grateful that my parents taught me how to swim".

EXERCISE

This week I invite you to write down on 5 consecutive days a different gratitude statement for the past that brought you joy or satisfaction.
