RECOGNITION/ACKNOWLEDGEMENT DEFINED AND ITS POWER

I'm using the words recognition and acknowledgement to mean praising and validating something positive about another person. Remember, the most basic need is to feel appreciated and valued. That's why acknowledgment is so powerful.

TYPES OF ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Acknowledgement can be as simple as a smile, a high-five, a thumbs up, or a verbal praise for something specific (not just the general "you're doing a good job").

THE BENEFITS OF GIVING ACKNOWLEDGMENT VS. WITHHOLDING ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Acknowledgement Can Increase:                Withholding Acknowledgement Can Bring:

-enthusiasm                                             -discouragement

-energy                                                    -lack of interest

-loyalty/positive morale                              -disloyalty/low morale

-self-esteem                                             -low self-esteem

EXERCISE

This week I invite you to do the following:

  1. Acknowledge someone for specifically doing something positive. It could be someone in your work place, family, organization, a clerk, etc.
  2. Acknowledge a person's efforts even before the project is completed.
  3. Acknowledge a person's very existence with a smile or hello, etc.
  4. Observe how that person "shines" and how it makes you feel.
