GRAPPLE

Grappling with any challenging business or personal issue demands thinking, focus, and patience. The answer usually isn't obvious and can be mentally stressful. That's why people avoid it.

GRAPPLE AVOIDANCE

It's easy to avoid grappling (strenuous thinking) by:

-Busyness. Keeping busy with electronic devices, checking emails, surfing the web, texting, etc. Dr. Hallowell calls this the "screen-sucking addiction".

-Data Mania. Collecting or researching unnecessary data

-Refrigerator Cleaning. Even the most successful people have to overcome this. When asked his secret to writing a novel, Hemmingway, in his characteristic way replied, "well, first of all you clean out your refrigerator." We've all experienced something like this, like cleaning our desk or sorting mail or getting up for a snack, etc.-anything to avoid grappling.

PAIN=GAIN + LTP

-Grappling with a real problem can be really frustrating. Have you experienced headaches when grappling?

-Yet without some pain, there can be no gain, and no growth.

-Long-term Potentiation. Here's some good news. Neuroscientists tell us that this painful process actually causes our neurons to grow and is called "Long-Term Potentiation" (LTP) By practicing grappling, we are able to grapple with future complex issues more easily, thus allowing us to reach "Peak Performance".

GRAPPLE & GRIT

Grit Defined:

Grit is being defined as the common quality found in people who grapple their way to Peak Performance and to being effective leaders. Dr. Hallowell defines grit as "perseverance and passion for long term goals". It requires stamina, like a marathon runner. A person with grit can handle adversity, setbacks, and plateaus, as part of the process. Names that come to mind are Washington, Edison, Franklin, D. Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill.

EXERCISE

This week I invite you do to the following:

  1. Pick a project (whether it be related to work, home, or an organization) that you have avoided grappling.
  2. Remind yourself that this is an LTP (Long-Term Potentiation) which will grow your neurons and make your next grappling task easier.
  3. Get an accountability partner and someone to join you.

Please share this exercise with me. I will listen. I regularly coach people to grapple and grow on issues crucial to their careers or life. I will give you support and suggestions. Don't hesitate to call me. Invest in yourself. You're worth it!
