STAN MUSIAL | |
For Midwesterners, especially Missourians, the name Stan Musial has fond memories. This gentle man and baseball legend passed away last month. He lead the National League in hitting 7 times, had over 3600 hits, and was a consistent, dedicated athlete. And he also led his team to greatness by his example. After his career, he became an established icon in St. Louis, well known for his graciousness and kindness.
|
|
STAN LEAD BY EXCELLENCE WITHOUT THE DRAMA | |
Musial played at a time with other baseball greats, such as Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle. Unfortunately, these other athletes were plagued by demons or personal problems. Often they were on the center stage of high drama and conflict that had little to do with baseball. While I am not judging these other men, the fact is Stan stood apart. He was consistent, kind, and performed his skills with excellence for over two decades without drawing drama or attention to himself. He lead by example. This type of star does not usually get high media publicity.

THE POINT | |
The point of this issue is to consider how you lead by example in your daily activities with your family, community, business, and other organizations. Many of you go about your day as leaders, choosing to shun the limelight and instead choosing to grow and develop your leadership skills. That's what Stan did. |
| EXERCISE | |
This week I invite you to reflect on the following:
- Is your style of leadership authoritarian based or do you lead by example?
- Is your style of leadership based on respect or fear?
- Is it your goal to be idolized or to be acknowledged for your leadership?
- Examine your leadership skills. Are you committed each day to strive for excellence?
I look forward to hearing from you. I am trained to coach people to enhance their existing leadership skills and teach them new leadership skills. Just pick up the phone and call me. Invest in yourself. You are worth it!

Stan Musial taught us:
"That it is more important to be appreciated than glorified,
To be respected than to be celebrated,
To be understood and loved than to be idolized, and
That friendship is more important than things."
