ALTHEA GIBSON & HER ENCOURAGER |
In our last issue we examined Dr. King's bold dreams and goals. Today we look at another African American hero, Althea Gibson (1927-2003) from Harlem. She captured the attention of Dr. Walter Johnson, a respected physician who was active in the black tennis community. With his and others' encouragement she was able to break the color barrier of the exclusive tennis world. Then she started breaking records, such as being the first African-American woman to win the Wimbledon. She won 11 major titles including the French Open and the U.S. Open and has been an inspiration to many. She often acknowledged that she would not have succeeded without the encouragement and support of Dr. Johnson and others.

EXERCISE |
- NAME A HERO IN YOUR LIFE. Is it a parent, a relative, a student, an employer, an employee, a Rabi or church minister, a teacher, a coach, a friend, a neighbor, or perhaps a business leader? Think of someone who has inspired you to achieve your goals and dreams. Then call him/her and say thank you. If you can't call that person, then call someone else and tell them about your hero. And of course please tell me your hero and your reasons. I really want to know.
- HEROES NEED ENCOURAGEMENT. There is a hero, or one in the making, out there somewhere, who needs your encouragement and help. It could be a young or old person, someone in a career change, someone with great potential who is struggling, someone with health problems, family problems, or addictions. Just take the simple step of picking up the phone, offer encouragement, and ask how you can help. Both of you will feel great. Please tell me the results.

"I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me." - Althea Gibson
