Pastoral Reflections by James Lamkin"Not-for-Profit, Prophets" This summer's sermon series will explore the portrait gallery of Israel's Wildcards: The Hebrew prophets. The lectionary texts cover a few of them; so I widened the tent to include a few more. The prophets were an odd lot. Angular in perspective. Singular in focus. Their words and their work belonged not to themselves, but to God. They were outsiders...not beholding to any magistrate's machinery or money. In a world addicted to power and wealth, they had little need for either. They were free; and as such, they were dangerous. They were not-for-profit, prophets. Rabbi Abraham Heschel said a Hebrew prophet, "... sees people as they are, and as they ought to be. Someone who reflects his time, yet lives outside time. A prophet is forever awake, forever alert; he is never indifferent, least of all to injustice...." We will take a look at the first one this coming Sunday: ole' Elijah. Fredrick Buechner said of him: Since the prophets were to the kings, like ants to a picnic, then Elijah was to Ahab like a swarm of bees! Ahab, the king of Israel, called him a troublemaker. Of course, what Elijah really was, was God's whistleblower. As we walk through the prophets' portrait gallery this summer, we will also look at the mirrors between the paintings. This rhythm of exploration and introspection will call us to confession, profession, and repentance.

Summer Sermon Series
Not-for Profits Prophets Sundays at 11 AM, May 29 - September 4
This Summer's Sermon Series is built upon the odd, angular preachers of the Old Testament: the Hebrew Prophets. They functioned as Israel's immune system. Whenever the Hebrew Faith became too aligned with culture or comfort or power or privilege...God sent a prophet. By today's standards of success, productivity, winning, or profit-making...the prophets failed. They were Not-for-Profit, Prophets. But they were called by God to be faithful...and so are we. How shall we respond?
