 Pastoral Reflections by James Lamkin"Job Opening: Sinner in Residence"
I will miss Jeff Brewer. He, like most members of NDBC, was a character!
One of his earliest jobs was as a Coca-Cola undercover sampler...a secret agent of quality control. He would go different soda fountains, order a Coke, then covertly siphon some into a flask in his coat pocket. The sample was then sent to HQ for analysis. "00 Brewer." He also spent many years using calculus to craft an equation to understand the rise and fall of the Stock Market. At his memorial service, I read part of a note from him. The sentences were short; and the humor, quick. It was signed, "Sinner in Residence." I told the congregation, "First, I will miss this 'Sinner in Residence,' and second, we now have a job opening!" I told them that we would begin receiving applications; and that they could use me as a reference. The punchline is not the sinner part...for we all are that. It is the in residence. Whatever it means to be community, church, and congregation, it means to reside. We reside in relationship to one another, even as we abide in God. Jesus did that. As the Gospel of John puts it, "And the Word became flesh and resided among us." Eugene Peterson translates it: moved into our neighborhood. Said another way, Jesus Christ became our "Savior in Residence." Even as I write these words, other words sit nearby. They are obituaries for Willie Hicks's wife, Hillary; and Carol Fox, a good friend of Wilton and Martha Looney, who also was a friend of Joan McIntyre; plus, there are the funeral plans for Bill Grant, beloved brother of Walter Grant. The muddy boots of death have left their tracks among us. However, the bottom line of the Gospel is that there is a Savior in Residence. This is Good News, wonderful news, for all of us who qualify for the Sinner in Residence job. Thank God. (And by the way, saintly folk need not apply.)

 Welcome Dr. Keith Walker
Dr. Keith Walker has been selected by the Personnel Committee upon recommendation of the Music Search Committee to serve as Director of Music Ministries effective July 1, 2016. Keith holds the BS degree from Georgia Tech, the Bachelor of Music from Georgia Regents University in Augusta, the Master of Music from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and the Doctor of Musical Arts in conducting from the University of South Carolina. He has worked with church choirs from the time of his childhood, taught and directed music at Darton College in Albany, and serves a variety of community arts groups including Director of the Festival Singers of Atlanta. He is well known in the music community and has worked with Greg and Bettye Colson. He will have responsibilities for the quality of all music ministries, planning worship with the staff, leading the Sanctuary and Handbell Choirs, and collaborating with Interim Organist Jeff McConnaughey.

Update on NDBC Discernment Process

On behalf of the Church Council, I want to thank all NDBC members who participated in our Discernment Process concerning whether to offer the ministry of marriage to same-sex couples within our congregation. The discussions during this process led us to adopt the following statement of policy at a special called meeting of the Church-in-conference on April 17, 2016:
Northside Drive Baptist Church, believing in the love of God for all persons, will provide equal access to all facets of the life and ministry of our church (including membership, baptism, ordination, marriage, teaching, staffing, and leadership) without regard to sexual orientation or gender identity.
Of 115 ballots cast at the meeting on April 17, there were 99 votes (86%) in favor of the policy and 16 votes (14%) in opposition to the policy. There was also one recorded abstention.
As a result of our adoption of this statement of policy, we need to revise our current wedding policy, primarily to incorporate gender-neutral terminology in the policy and to modify some outdated provisions. Theresa Goriczynski, who has been the chair of our Wedding Committee for several years, will serve as chair of an ad hoc committee to revise our wedding policy. Ken Brant, Cheryl Dewell, Brian Knight, and Elizabeth Sheeley will serve with Theresa as members of this ad hoc committee.

Summer Missions Project
Snacks for summer camps
The Andrew P. Stewart Center and Park Avenue Baptist Church provide summer camps for children living in the Pittsburg and Grant Park communities. The Missions Team is collecting snacks for both camps.
Requested items are individual serving size juice boxes, granola bars, goldfish, fruit cups, applesauce cups, and chips (regular or baked). Collection baskets are available at the entrances to the Chapel.

NDBC's Annual Business Meeting

 20.30 - Braves Game Young Adult & a Braves Game

This season is the Braves last season at Turner Field. Join the Young Adults in the congregation as we go to cheer on the Braves in this historic stadium on May 28 at 4 PM. Please RSVP to Jeffrey if you are able to attend so the proper amount of tickets can be purchased. Carpooling from the church is an option as well. Summer Sermon Series

This Summer's Sermon Series is built upon the odd, angular preachers of the Old Testament: the Hebrew Prophets. They functioned as Israel's immune system. Whenever the Hebrew Faith became too aligned with culture or comfort or power or privilege...God sent a prophet. By today's standards of success, productivity, winning, or profit-making...the prophets failed. They were Not-for-Profit, Prophets. But they are called by God to be faithful...and so are we. How shall we respond?

May 1 Callaway Cup Results
Jordan Clark is a back-to-back Callaway Cup winner. Against a small but highly competitive field, Jordan posted a net 70 at Wolf Creek on May 1. Two notable shots were Closest to the pins on par threes by Jordan Clark and Hal Meeks. Chuck Stines was low gross, but is was more gross than usual.

Don't want to get up before 9 AM? Join this class of young singles and couples in their 20s and 30s at the big table in the balcony of the Narthex after the worship service in an informal setting for snacks and coffee. We will gather around the table every Sunday to briefly examine the lectionary texts, deconstruct the sermon of the day, and fellowship together. We will then go to lunch together after class. |

as a time into which we place various events, including but not limited to after-church lunches, afternoon outdoor activities, evening movies, service projects, and trips to nearby spiritual sites
