"The Perfect Mother's Day Gift: Moral Courage"

Dear Governor Deal,
I believe you've given the perfect Mother's Day gift. I do not know if your mother is still living, but if so, I hope she would be proud. I don't think there is a better gift one can give, than moral courage.
Thank you for your choice in vetoing both the Campus Carry bill regarding guns in the schools, as well as the alleged Religious Liberty bill. As my colleague, Rabbi Peter Berg of the Temple on Peachtree said, you have made "morally courageous decisions this term and the religious leadership is grateful."
The pressures and powers of political winds are strange these days. To me, they seem stranger and stronger than usual. The wind shears of fear endorsed by faith has made for a political Tornado Alley.
Though I only see from afar, legislation seems incredibly tedious and trying and exhausting. I admire a leader's ethical tenacity to walk into the fray every day.
You are a Baptist brother, Governor Deal. We are the off-the-beaten-path Baptist neighbors down the street. One of your predecessors was a member of our church. His momma always told him to join the Baptist church nearest his kitchen stove every time he moved. So, he did. 1971-75, Jimmy Carter served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Northside Drive Baptist.
I'm sure the current political issues will continue to recycle...at least for the rest of my lifetime. Guns and God, firearms and faith are as American as motherhood and apple pie.
But Sunday is not Apple Pie Day. It is Mother's Day. Because of it, I think of the group called Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, created after Sandy Hook in 2012. The group asks for legislators, companies, and educational institutions to establish common-sense gun reforms. Governor, you gave these moms a good Mother's Day gift; and we Georgians are beneficiaries, as well.
     Thanks for your moral courage.
Northside Kids'
Family Spring Activity &
Choir Rehearsal
Saturday, May 7
from 10 AM-12PM
Families, we are so excited about all the wonderful Summer events that will be happening this year! To kick it off we are having a Children's Ministry party and Choir practice on May 7. This is very similar to our annual Cookie and Choir party that happens in December, however, we felt planting flowers would be more appropriate for the Spring! So, we will start at 10 AM with choir practice and during that time our parents will set up the gardening materials in the Porte-co-chere and have time to drink coffee and fellowship. Choir practice will last about 40 minutes and after that we will move outside to plant flowers in small pots to take to our church members who are home bound. We will finish up around noon.

Summer Sermon Series
Sundays at 11 AM, May 29 - September 4
This Summer's Sermon Series is built upon the odd, angular preachers of the Old Testament: the Hebrew Prophets. They functioned as Israel's immune system. Whenever the Hebrew Faith became too aligned with culture or comfort or power or privilege...God sent a prophet. By today's standards of success, productivity, winning, or profit-making...the prophets failed. They were
Not-for-Profit, Prophets. But they are called by God to be faithful...and so are we. How shall we respond?
