 Pastoral Reflections by James Lamkin"On Preaching" Fredrick Buechner is an oft quoted patron saint of NDBC. His musings echo a kind of "faithful skepticism" shared by several Northside Drive members...of whom I am one. This is both a help and a hazard for preaching. As Rev. Nadia Boltz-Webber puts it, each journey of sermon preparation is like having a "not very interesting mental illness." Obsessively, it captures the preacher's week. Here is a piece from Buechner's book Telling the Truth. His sentences are long; but the longer you linger with them, the larger the truths that emerge. I offer this as a prayer request as you and I together step weekly onto the high-wire of homiletics. It spans the gap between God's good past, and God's great future. Being a Wallenda can be both wonderful and woeful. Switching on the lectern light and clearing his throat, the preacher speaks both the word of tragedy and the word of comedy because they are both of them of the truth and because Jesus speaks them both, blessed be he. The preacher tells the truth by speaking of the visible absence of God because if he doesn't see and own up to the absence of God in the world, then he is the only one there who doesn't see it, and who then is going to take him seriously when he tries to make real what he claims also to see as the invisible presence of God in the world? Sin and grace, absence and presence, tragedy and comedy, they divide the world between them and where they meet head on, the Gospel happens. Let the preacher preach the Gospel of their preposterous meeting as the high, unbidden, hilarious thing it is. Sunday will soon come. Get ready to listen. With an almost gravity-defying power, and without a net, the Gospel will once again stand tall as a "high, unbidden, hilarious thing." Amen. |
Youth Sunday, May 1, 2016

 The Callaway Cup
The Callaway Cup golf tournament is scheduled for May 1, 2016. The after-church outing is for all members, regardless of age, gender or talent. The Highly Coveted Callaway Cup is named in honor of Raymund Callaway, a long-time member of NDBC. We now play in memory of Raymund who died in 2003. (No finer gentleman ever struck a ball.)  Northside Kids' Family Spring Activity &
Choir Rehearsal Saturday, May 7
from 10 AM-12PM Families, we are so excited about all the wonderful Summer events that will be happening this year! To kick it off we are having a Children's Ministry party and Choir practice on May 7. This is very similar to our annual Cookie and Choir party that happens in December, however, we felt planting flowers would be more appropriate for the Spring! So, we will start at 10 AM with choir practice and during that time our parents will set up the gardening materials in the Porte-co-chere and have time to drink coffee and fellowship. Choir practice will last about 40 minutes and after that we will move outside to plant flowers in small pots to take to our church members who are home bound. We will finish up around noon. |
Tired Parents Class Breakfast
May 8 @ 9:30 AM,in the Fellowship Hall With all the crazy things going on in our lives each month, we wanted to create a time and space where you can fellowship and socialize with other tired parents. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall and share breakfast together during Church School. If you are still looking for a church school class, please join us!

 Triple E: Spring Picnic May 10 @ 11:00 AM
Triple E will celebrate the end of the year with a picnic at the home of Mark & Melissa Bryson. Come and enjoy time with friends before we begin our summer break. Directions are available in the Narthex. Transportation is also available from the church.

 Church Work Day Saturday, May 14, from 9 AM-1 PM Mark your calendar! It is time for the next all-church clean up and work day. We have many different jobs that need some willing hands! Join us from 9 AM-1 PM on Saturday as we spruce up the inside of the church while others accomplish outside landscaping tasks. This is a great way to serve with your friends and family for a few meaningful hours. We will have the needed supplies ready; simply contact the church office to let us know you are participating. Childcare and snacks will be provided. |

SANCTUARY RENOVATIONS
Repairs are underway to the Sanctuary Narthex ceiling and flooring, and also to the Sanctuary flooring in the Nave and Chancel...plus new pew cushions are on the way! Due to the installation times of these improvements, we will meet for worship in the Chapel (not the Sanctuary) on April 24 and May 1.

Join this class of young singles and couples in their 20s and 30s at the big table in the balcony of the Narthex after the worship service in an informal setting for snacks and coffee.
