NORTHSIDE NOTES: April 20, 2016
Pastoral Reflections
 by James Lamkin

"The Gospel of Thomas"

Each of us has a Gospel. Your Gospel is your particular experience and articulation of how God has brought the good news of love and grace and growth into your life...and how God continues to do so.
Two months ago, the sixth pastor of NDBC, Rev. Tom Conley, shared his Gospel. Tom gave a presentation to our church school during our discernment process from his own studies and experiences; then, Betty and Scott and he joined us for worship where it was announced that NDBC had made a Founder's Gift in his honor to the Alliance of Baptists. A luncheon and discussion with him followed worship.
After the event, Tom sent a letter of gratitude and affirmation to the congregation. It is a good signpost on the sacred path which we travel. Here 'tis:

My Dear Northside Drive Members,
It was a profound honor to be asked to present material on same-sex marriage at your gathering Sunday, February 14. Your serious consideration of this issue is consistent with the progressive and positive stance you have taken through the years. You were an attentive and receptive audience, and it was a pleasure to break bread with you and have follow-up questions after the wonderful lunch.
None of this could have happened without the strong leadership of your diaconate, church council, discernment committee, and assertive pastoral and staff support. It appears you are well on your way to be a fully welcoming and inviting church to all who will come through your doors seeking a wholesome and thorough ministry. I commend you for that openness.
I was totally surprised when told that the Missions Committee had made a $1,000.00 contribution to the Alliance of Baptists in my honor. I was privileged to assist in the establishment of that organization some 30 years ago. I am deeply moved and so very appreciative.
Betty, Scott and I were profoundly grateful to see so many friends at the presentations. For many of us, we have been through our losses, watched our children grow into young adulthood, and they are now helping us through our senior years. Others are where a number of us used to be: chasing running children through those same hallowed halls our kids raced through many years ago. But young or older, there is a vibrancy and strong presence of the Great Spirit in your midst that the three of us noticed. You will always have a warm and loving place in our hearts.
I must commend Your pastor, James, for his consistent leadership through these years. He has been faithful and successful as your leader. Please treat him and Liz with kindness and love, as I know you will. Being a pastor is never easy, and it takes its toll. Continued blessings on James, his family, and both the lay and professional leadership.
With a grateful heart and a rich collection of pleasant memories, I remain, richly blessed by your presence in my life.

Rev. Dr. Karen Massey Award Recipient
The staff and congregation of Northside Drive Baptist Church congratulate Rev. Dr. Karen Massey who received the Baptist Women in Ministry of Georgia's 2016 Distinguished Church Woman of the Year Award. The presentation was made at the BWIM of Georgia lunch on April 16, at Smoke Rise Baptist Church in Stone Mountain.
Karen was an associate pastor at Northside Drive and built meaningful connections with church members and staff. Even today, she lovingly maintains a pastoral presence through preaching, teaching, worship leadership, leading funerals, and making hospital visits. Her compassionate service to ministry is ongoing and her care brings stability to Northside Drive.
Karen not only makes extraordinary contributions to ministry as an active member and invested leader at church, she willingly shares her wide knowledge, experience, and talents with students and young ministers as a professor and administer at McAfee School of Theology. The seminary students and aspiring young clergy of McAfee and Northside Drive Baptist Church greatly benefit from Karen's many years of theological study, ministry training, and leadership skills. Her pastoral presence, as she regularly stands in the lectern, pulpit, and classroom is important for students and young ministers to witness in order to grow in their confidence and skill.
Dr. Massey has been a core piece of Northside Drive's past and will continue to be a building block in the future. Again, the members and staff of Northside Drive Baptist Church congratulate Rev. Dr. Karen Massey on this great accomplishment.

Summer Sermon Series
Sundays at 11 AM, May 29 - September 4
This Summer's Sermon Series is built upon the odd, angular preachers of the Old Testament: the Hebrew Prophets. They functioned as Israel's immune system. Whenever the Hebrew Faith became too aligned with culture or comfort or power or privilege...God sent a prophet. By today's standards of success, productivity, winning, or profit-making...the prophets failed. They were
Not-for-Profit, Prophets. But they are called by God to be faithful...and so are we. How shall we respond?

YOUTH ISLAND ADVENTURE
Jeffrey Dunkerley, Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministries

We escaped! The youth took on the challenge of breaking out of a room the last weekend of February. We managed to get off of the island before the volcano erupted. The rest of the night we played games and shared laughs over milkshakes. Thank you to all of the adults that helped make this event possible.

We are officially registered for PASSPORT Camps this summer too. We will be going to Danville, VA, to participate in PASSPORT Missions June 26-July 1. If you or anyone you know would be interested in chaperoning this trip, please let me know.
WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY
