Musical Mussings
by Len Willingham
"Looking Ahead to Advent and Christmas"
I can hardly believe that we are a little over a week away from Thanksgiving! If that were not enough to deal with, I look at the calendar and see that Advent begins the Sunday after Thanksgiving! This is the time of year that every Minister of Music takes a deep breath, tightens his belt, and gets prepared for the swift ride into Christmas. First, let me share some things about the Sunday before Thanksgiving. As part of the service we will be lead in worship by our children's choir under the direction of Mary Lou Swann. This choir, though young, will lead us in a song of Thanksgiving. Following the service the Sanctuary Choir will have a brief one hour rehearsal to prepare for the First Sunday in Advent, November 29, which is the Sunday following Thanksgiving. Because many of you will be traveling and possibly will not return in time for worship, James is planning a different type of service in three parts. Parker Holloway will be playing the piano, since Jeff McConnaughey will not be with us that day. The piano will be our lead instrument in worship and the choir will sing from the steps in front of the alter and sit with the congregation. The Second Sunday in Advent will follow our normal worship order with communion. As part of the service, we will hear from one of our staff singers singing the bass solos from Messiah---Thus Saith the Lord and But Who May Abide. The Third Sunday in Advent will be a special day of music as the Sanctuary Choir, along with brass and organ, leads us in a special service of as they present a work by K. Lee Scott, entitled, Christmas Cantata: The Incarnation. In addition, the Handbells will accompany the choir on the Introit, and the brass will join the choir to present Christmas Gloria, by Allen Pote. As part of the service the Children's choirs will once again lead us in worship as they sing during the service. This should be a very exciting service and I hope all of you will plan to be with us in worship on December 13. The Fourth Sunday in Advent will prepare us to look to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The traditional Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve along with special music from the choir will prepare our hearts and minds for Christmas Day. The coming of the season helps us usher in the coming of the Christ child. Let us lift our hearts in prayer and our voices in joyful celebration of the coming of the babe born in Bethlehem-Jesus Christ our Lord. |
 Thursday Night Study Group
Understanding Ruth
Art &Soul Classroom @ 6:00 PM
w/Liz Harris-Lamkin: November 5, 12, 19
In these engaging sessions Rev. Dr. Lisa Wolfe takes you on an enlightening journey through the Book of Ruth. This is a lively and thoughtful examination. Dr. Wolfe considers the vulnerability of widows and the difficult situation of foreigners in biblical times. She explores themes of loyalty, bitterness, courage, poverty and seduction. What really happened on the threshing room floor? Combining humor and careful scholarship, this study invites you to re-read the book with new insight and understanding for all its characters, especially the intelligent, confident-even uppity-heroine Ruth.

The Preschool is sponsoring a book fair with the Barnes and Noble store (located on 2900 Peachtree Rd in Atlanta). The school will receive 15% of the proceeds raised from the sale, which will be used to purchase books and music for the Preschool Library.

Just enter the code 11719499 at check-out.
If you need a new book, or plan to give books as presents this holiday season, please help support the Preschool when you make your purchase. Church members are always welcome to borrow a book from our nice collection. Stop by the preschool office, and I will personally help you choose the perfect book for your child or grandchild.

Missions Corner
Festival of Thanksgiving
On November 22 the altar steps will be overflowing with fresh fruits and vegetables which serve to remind us of the blessings of beauty and abundance in our lives. After the service, the food will, as in past years, be donated to Urban Recipe a food cooperative in southeast Atlanta. Originally, serving as Georgia Avenue Community Ministry, Urban Recipe's primary focus is the formation of food cooperatives which give members a sense of extended family and the opportunity to work together. This ministry serves anyone in need and today there are 350 families in 7 different food co-ops. At the heart of Urban Recipe is food security, dignity, and community.
Christmas Giving at Northside Drive
Although, the fall leaves are still clinging to the trees and the Thanksgiving turkey has not been purchased, it's time to plan our Christmas mission projects. As in the past several years, NDBC will be providing gifts to both children and adults though Buckhead Christian Ministries (Joyous Toys), Morningstar Children and Family Services (residential and foster care for children with special needs), and the The Extension (transitional home for those recovering from addictions). Detailed information about all of the giving opportunities will be available through brochures in the Narthex and in the next Pinnacle. Questions? Please contact Barbara Atchley 770-436-0709.

Christmas Poinsettias (revised) Orders received November 29-December 13
It has long been our tradition at Northside Drive to give poinsettias each Christmas in honor/memory/thankfulness for our friends and family. This year our annual Poinsettia display will be in place on Sunday, December 20. After the 10:30 PM service on December 24, you will be able to take home a memorial Poinsettia to enjoy throughout the Christmas season. Each Poinsettia plant is only $20. Order envelopes are available in the Narthex for your use-simply fill it out & drop it in the offering plate. Or call Rose Hidlay at 404-237-8621 with the number of Poinsettias you wish to give, the memorial details, and mail your check to the church office. The deadline for orders is December 13.
*U.S. tax regulations do not allow us to offer contribution credit for Easter & Christmas plants because the plants are returned to the giver.

Hanging of the Green and the First Sunday of Advent Sunday, November 29, 2015
You're invited to our annual Hanging of the Green Service Sunday, November 29, in the NDBC Narthex & Sanctuary, at 9:30 AM. This is always a special service marking the beginning of the Advent Season. In lieu of Church School we will gather in the Narthex at 9:30 AM for fellowship and refreshments followed by reflections on the season and sacred music as we decorate the Sanctuary. Plan to bring greens from your garden (holly, magnolia, evergreens, etc.) to help adorn our sacred space. Parents: This will be a family-friendly service. Children will be invited to carry greenery into the Sanctuary, hang Chrismons, and gather around the tree for a special song with Kurt Thomas. Childcare will also be provided for up to age 5; however, we hope all parents will bring their children to this special service. |
Advent Adult Church School
Practicing the Virtues of Advent
Dr. Becky Shoaf
December 6, 13, 20 & 27
9:30 AM in Room #202
Amid the holiday rush, observing the season of Advent creates an inward calm. When we approach the four weeks before Christmas as opportunities for reflection on Christ's birth, and when we put ourselves in the shoes of the Israelites long ago as they longed for the Messiah to come, we keep ourselves focused on what really matters in our lives.
The church has traditionally assigned four virtues to each of the four Sundays in Advent: hope, peace, joy, and love. Our lessons during Advent will explore these virtues.
May God instill these virtues in each of us this Advent, not in spite of the busyness of the season, but in the very midst of the hustle and bustle as we love God and love our neighbors.

CHURCH MAINTENANCE SUGGESTION BOX
Rose Hidlay, Business Manager There is now a way for church members to deal with church maintenance issues as they arise. There is a clipboard located at the Business Office entrance door. If you see something that needs to be repaired or replaced, jot it down on the clipboard. I will look into it and get it taken care of. Willie Hicks, one of our custodians, and I appreciate your input, and will work on the problems as they arise. |
