Northside Drive Baptist Church Donates to South Carolina Flood Relief
Communities across South Carolina are dealing with the destruction brought by the recent storms. With a death toll of 14 and nearly $1 billion of damage across the state, families and businesses are facing a long process of recovery. "The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship South Carolina disaster response plan is to bring financial, material, and human resources to churches so that they can help their neighbors in the immediate aftermath of the floods," said Jay Kieve, CBFSC Coordinator.
CBF South Carolina is working with several churches in Columbia and Charleston as they seek to address the needs of their flood ravaged communities. CBFSC has provided support and is reaching out to churches including Providence Baptist Church in Charleston assisting families affected by the flooding in a community with which they have partnered for 15 years. Kathwood Baptist Church in Columbia plans to expand their existing day-care ministry to allow impacted families to have a safe place for their children as they deal with flood-damaged homes. Emmanuel Baptist Church in Columbia is assessing the long-term needs of the surrounding community and a low-income community as they seek to meet immediate needs as quickly as possible.
CBF has contributed an initial $5,000 to the relief efforts and is encouraging Cooperative Baptists and friends to support the Fellowship's response in South Carolina. Through our Missions Budget, Northside Drive has responded to that request by sending $1,000 to aid in recovery.

Thank you from two Mission Partners
Laura (Wheeler) and Carson Foushee, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Partner-Funded Field Personnel serving for three years in Kanazawa, Japan: "We send our thanks for the gift to our ministry. Your support means so much to us and we are thankful for your ongoing partnership as we serve with two congregations in Japan building relationships and helping them find their place within the Christian community." Learn more about their ministry at fousheesinjapan.com.
Agape Center, Bolton Rd., Atlanta: "We appreciate the donation from Northside Drive Baptist Church. Your support helps Agape continue to provide youth development, education, and family services for 220 kids and 35 seniors each day. This summer Agape expended the reading readiness programming for Camp Jumpstart. For six weeks 35 rising first and second graders met with Agape staff and volunteers every Monday and Wednesday for two hours each day for reading and vocabulary skills practice. The students then transitioned into the two-week, full-day academic Agape program to emerge from the summer ready to succeed. Thank you for supporting this important program." Musical Musings by Rev. Len Willingham
End of Summer Sanctuary Choir Retreat
The Sanctuary Choir Retreat, that took place on August 29, was a success. Although it was short notice for the choir, we had a positive turnout of 17 choir members to read through the music for the fall and to preview music for Advent and Christmas. It was good to have a chance to get together and revisit old friendships and to meet new choir members that I did not know. We sang, we laughed, we told stories on one another, we broke bread together, and had a very good time together. The Choir Retreat was a good time to come together as a group, while making music together. We are off to a good start and we would welcome any who like to sing to come join us on Thursday nights in the choir room from 7:15-8:45 PM. I am pleased to announce that Mr. Jeff McConnaughey will be playing the organ for us through the months of October and November, as well as the Sunday before Christmas and Christmas Eve. I am glad to be back at Northside Drive leading the music ministry during this interim period. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of the church during this important transition period. Soli Deo Gloria! |

"Romans: The Letter that Changed Christian History"
by Mary Lester
October 8, 15, 22; Art & Soul @ 6 PM
Phoebe, a deacon from the Cenchrea church, trudged up the streets of Rome, looking for the house of the well-known Christian leaders Priscilla and Aquila. She had agreed to deliver a letter to the church in Rome on Paul's behalf while there on business. After nearly an 800-mile journey from Corinth, Greece, Phoebe had arrived in the mighty seat of the Roman Empire holding nothing less than what would become one of the mightiest books of the canon.
What was so urgent that Paul needed to write to the Christians in Rome? On the one hand, Paul was laying the groundwork for his upcoming visit as well as preparing his readers for future requests to help in his church-planting efforts. After leaving Corinth, Paul planned to travel east to Jerusalem and then reverse course and head west to Spain. On the way to Spain, he would stop in Rome to meet the Christians there and seek their help for the Spanish mission. This was not the only reason, however. If Paul simply wanted to send greetings and alert the Roman church that he would like their help in future missions efforts, he didn't need to compose such a magnum opus. Why did he do it? What was the purpose of this massive theological treatise? Why did he choose this letter to explain his theology more fully than he did anywhere else? What does this theological book have to say to us today? These are the ultimate questions of Romans, written by the Apostle to the Gentiles in the greatest Gentile city of the day. Join us in a study of this life-altering work from Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles.
