Special Meeting of Church-in-conference: September 20, 2015
Moderator Don Janney has called a special meeting of the Church-in-conference on Sunday, September 20, 2015, to consider the ordination of Alyssa Aldape to Christian ministry by our church. We will convene this special meeting in the NDBC Sanctuary immediately following the morning worship service. Alyssa has served as the Director of Youth Ministries at NDBC since 2013 and recently received her M.Div. degree from Mercer University's McAfee School of Theology. The Ordination Council, chaired by Karen Massey, and the Diaconate, chaired by Susan Pearson, have both recommended that our church ordain Alyssa. Please plan to remain after the worship service on September 20, to consider this important matter.
Pastoral Reflections
  by James Lamkin

"May the Road Rise Up...."

"Walker, there is no path," said a Spanish poet to a pilgrim on the Camino de Santiago, "the path is made by walking."
As I made my path and walked across Spain three years ago, I met folk from around the world. When asked, "Why are you doing this?" none of us had a good answer. We scratched our heads, stared at our shoes, then nodded with a common understanding that needed no words. Most of us just felt called to do it.
At about the 300 mile mark, with only 200 miles to go, I met Georgina and Paul. They were young folks...about the age of my son and daughter. Paul was a building contractor; Georgina, a sports physical therapist. And they were both Irish.
We didn't intend to walk together. We just did, here and there. I would not see them for a few days; then, there they would be! We would tell stories, sing songs, ask questions, and live without knowing all of the answers. The day after I'd arrived in Santiago de Compostella, they turned-up.
We shared a "last supper." Said good-byes; and that was it.
But it wasn't. Now, three years later, Liz and I are going to their wedding! To my surprise and delight, we've kept in touch. We've shared the ups and downs of life from afar. Their wedding invitation arrived awhile back. It mimicked a "Camino Passport" which every pilgrim was required to carry...complete with a map and brightly colored stamps and a whole lot of joy. It announced that their camino had taken a new turn. They were now beginning the pilgrimage of marriage; and they invited us to be witnesses.
Liz and are going to Ireland! We will be there September 14-26. The wedding event will be a three day experience which will include the whole wedding party hiking a few miles of the Wicklow Way (the Appalachian Trail of Ireland). Before and aft, Liz and I will wind our way around the mountains from the east coast to the west and try to keep count of the many shades of green.
The best news is that Liz and I are going together! Seemingly, our biggest adventures... from an Air Force Base on the cusp of the Persian Gulf, to an ultralight flight over Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe...we've ended-up traveling solo. But this time we're in tandem.
Rev. Mike Gregg will, "have the bridge," as Captain Kirk would say. Liz and I intend to be back for the Kurt Thomas concert on the lawn on the 26th, followed by the celebration of NDBC's 63rd anniversary the next day.
Like the Irish blessing says: "May the road rise up to meet you." Pray that for Liz and me as we cross The Pond and walk the Emerald Isle. And may the last line of the blessing be true for all of us: "And may God keep you in the palm of God's hand."

reel: NDBC MOVIE GROUP
The NDBC Movie Group gathers to see a movie in the theater, or in someone's home, several times a year. After the movie, those who attend this group, meet for dinner to meaningfully discuss the movie. We will meet next on Saturday, September 12. Contact the Vander Ven's for more information.

Movie: "Meur"
Location: LaFont, Sandy Springs
Time: 5:30 PM
Date: Saturday, September 12
Discussion: TBD

"After suffering dramatic set backs in their lives, three close friends who are among the world's best professional climbers battle their complicated pasts, inner demons and nature's harshest elements in an attempt to confront the Shark's Fin on Mount Meru, the most technically complicated and dangerous peak in the Himalayas, one that has never been scaled to completion."
What is the nature of risk-taking? What do you consider worth dying for? What is the nature of true friendship and how much do you ask from it? From family? And when does desire become obsession? These are a few discussion questions to consider.
Please try to let us know if you'll be attending! Thanks,

Tom and Cyndi Vander Ven

Our annual Church School Kick-Off is on Sunday, September 13, in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30 AM. Let's kick-off the new Church School year! You will learn about all the 2015-2016 Church School classes, explore provocative new curriculum, and congratulate all of the children on their promotions to their next grades. Come and reconnect with classmates, friends, and families. Bring your favorite breakfast food to share. Milk, juice and coffee will be provided.
Worship is Back in the Sanctuary
Sunday, September 13, 2015
Pilgrimage and procession are ancient rituals of return. On Sunday, September 13, we will leave summertime's worship in the Chapel with its intimate space, fervent singing, and original memories; and return to the Sanctuary with its tall, faceted-glass story windows, the transcendent sounds of the pipe organ, and the sacred space which has shaped us since the mid-seventies. The Sanctuary Choir will begin its weekly rehearsals on September 10.
Ladies of the Church, Mission Committee Needs You!
We would like to provide "cosmetic bags" loaded with goodies to the women at the Barbara J Crofton Center. Please bring in any new, unused cosmetic bags Estee Lauder, Clinique, etc. to the church as well as any hotel toiletry items. Collection basket will be in the Narthex. Gift bags will be delivered to the women later this fall. Contact Mona Stines 404-936-8812 with any questions.
Attention from the Children's Ministry Team
We are looking for a teacher for the 2-3 year-old Sunday School class. We have a wonderful and experienced assistant teacher as well as a paid nursery staff person committed to being there every week; we just need someone to take the lead.
There is no advance preparation required; just come to play, talk, read a Bible story, and build relationships with our little ones. As one of three on the team, you will be a loving face they associate with coming to church. The rewards will be great. If you love 2-3 year olds and can spare an hour for them on Sunday mornings,
WE NEED YOU. There will be substitutes available when you must be away. Please contact Karen Perry (karen.perry@comcast.net) to discuss this important need. Thank you!

Calling all NDBC members--older, younger, parents, singles, men or women...we need help with our children for one hour during worship every other month. Is this something you could possibly offer? Please consider getting on our nursery rotation schedule. The more folks who help, the fewer Sundays we will all have. The children will be in three different rooms by age group with a paid professional plus one volunteer in each. Have you been wondering who all these children are? Would you like to know them a little better? This is a wonderful opportunity! Please get in touch with Karen Perry (karen.perry@comcast.net) to say Yes!
