Pastoral Reflections by Rev. James Lamkin
"Thursday's Child Has Far to Go..." Do you recognize the words to the poem... the one about Monday's child and Tuesday's child? If so, then you know that "Wednesday's child is full of woe," plus, "Thursday's child has far to go." Atlanta and its challenges makes Wednesday's and Thursday's children of us all. Traffic and time are currencies used to spend our lives; and the exchange rate is tough. Most commuters are either "full of woe," or "have far to go," or both! But speaking of Thursdays...during the week of August 20, Len Willingham will begin serving as our Interim Director of Music Ministries. Though the Director of Music Ministries Search Committee is making good progress, some breathing room in their process is a good thing. So as not to rush, we've asked Len to help. Also, as you may be aware, Len was the Director of Music at NDBC 1989-1993...and he lived to tell it! Grateful am I, that he is willing to return for a spell and stand in the gap. Since Len teaches a college course north of Atlanta on Wednesday afternoons, he asked if we might consider moving choir practice from Wednesdays to Thursdays. The Sanctuary Choir discussed it and agreed. Out of continuity of resources, we are moving all Wednesday night activities to Thursdays...at least for the time being: Yoga, Bible and Topical Studies, Prayer Shawl Ministry, along with some committees and childcare. Presbyterians have been meeting on Thursday nights for years. Perhaps it's predestined. I believe these focused modifications regarding "the way we do church," are essential to our spiritual maturity and health. They are good practice. We are not the nimblest of outfits, but I think the ballast of deep traditions, plus an agile openness to the stirrings of the Spirit is life-giving. Yes, we may be "full of woe" and have "far to go"...but on most days we can name the Holy One's nearness; we can feel the love of friends; and we can experience the embrace of a congregation who doesn't let its woes call all of the shots, but goes at life dependent on the inclusive love of God. See you Thursday. It's not that far. |

Deacon Ordination: August 23, 2015
NDBC will honor the tradition of "the laying on of hands" as we ordain two new deacons. Parker Holloway and Jill Johnson will be ordained during the morning worship service in the NDBC Chapel on August 23.
As has been our tradition over the last several years, all of the congregation will be invited to participate in this time of blessing, celebration, and "setting-apart" for ministry.
Parker Holloway, along with his wife, Stacie, and two children: Paxton and Emma, have been part of NDBC since August 2013. He and his family reside in the Smyrna area. Parker is an anesthetist with Northside Anesthesiology Consultants, practicing throughout the Northside Hospital System.Parker grew up attending Antioch Baptist Church where he served as pianist from 1998-2005. One of the greatest opportunities he has at NDBC is to worship with and through the gift of music.
Jill Johnson joined Northside Drive Baptist Church in early 2014. She has two daughters, Maggie (4) and Sydney (2, turning 3 on August 22). Jill is a native of Irmo, South Carolina (a small town outside of Columbia) and received her BA in English from Clemson University in 2000. Jill moved to Atlanta in 2003 after graduating from law school at The University of South Carolina. Children's Church School
Missions & Music
Like last summer, some Sundays will be music focused, where children will have the opportunity to sing fun songs and learn about Bible stories through singing and playing instruments. On other Sundays, children will learn about taking God's love beyond our church walls and sharing Jesus with people all over our world. We'll hear about several families and how they responded to God's call to become missionaries. We can't wait to see our Preschool-5th Grade aged children in Missions & Music this summer! We'll meet in room #102 next to the Nursery every Sunday at 9:30 AM, until August 30. If you have any questions, please contact mike@northsidedrive.org.

God Stories
The Heart of the Bible
A Summer Sermon Series
June 7-September 6
The Bible is a library of stories. Even when it lists the Ten Commandments or Eight Beatitudes, each list fits within a story; and each story fits within God's Big Story of Love and Grace. Some of the Summer Sermons will include: David and Goliath, King David's Dance Fever, and How to Dust Off Your Shoes When You Get Rejected.
Like the rabbis say, "God created humans, because God loves stories."
