Pastoral Reflections
  by Rev. James Lamkin

"You Never See a Hearse Pulling
a U-Haul"

The origin of this saying is unclear; but the words have found their way into a toe-tapping song or two. There are even some imaginative pictures on the internet. Hearses don't need trailer hitches. You can't take it with you; but we try.

As a kid, I remember riding with a great uncle along the beach of Gulfport, MS. "Yep, it was right there they found his body," my uncle said. "This rich man had tied himself to that tree when the hurricane came ashore. He still had his money belt on with a million dollars in it."

Possessions are funny things. Do we possess them...or do they possess us? Too often, the stuff we own, owns us.

As we live our lives, we teach our children about these things. We teach them meaning of stuff. The old word for it was stewardship. It reminded that we really don't own anything; and if we think we do, then will we still own it in 100 years? How we relate to our stuff is a theological issue, because all stuff really belongs to God. You and I...we're just a passin' through.

This year, Mike Gregg and the Children's Ministry Team revisited the vintage idea of offering envelopes for children. When I was a kid, I never left home without it on the way to church. I remember the sheer joy of toting my offering envelope to Sunday School with my tithe in it. (Long before I learned fractions in math, I learned tithing from pie charts in Training Union.) I also remember thinking that God must have a mighty big pie...yet, remarkably, even my small piece of it counted. I was taught that we learn generosity from God. "For God so loved the world that God gave...."

During the "Time with the Children" in our worship services, our kids bring their offering envelopes forward. 'Tis a jubilant thing to see. In fact, I invite the congregation to take turns coming with them. Sit on the chancel with us. Admittedly, it's an extreme sport and not for the faint of heart; but it is heart-warming.

This is the ministry of muscle memory. "Bring up a child in the way that he or she should go; and then when old, they will not depart from it," says the Good Book. Giving reminds kids that they aren't the center of the universe. Giving reminds adults that they can't control the universe no matter hard they try. And giving reminds all of us that we can't take it with us...so we better enjoy the God given gift of generosity now. It certainly is a better investment than a hearse with a trailer hitch.

Welcome Len Willingham
as Interim Director of Music Ministries

Though the Music Ministry search committee is making good progress, the Personnel Committee has invited Len to help us bridge the gap and serve as the Interim Director of Music Ministries. Last Sunday, he met with the Sanctuary Choir, Personnel Committee, and the Music/Worship Ministry Team for a wonderful conversation filled with ministry possibilities.

As many of you know, Len was the Director of Music at NDBC 1989-1993. He and his wife, Marty, now live in Rome, GA. He will begin August 17. Please drop him a note and welcome him (again):

Notes from the Preschool at NDBC

The opening of the 2015-16 Preschool year is fast approaching. Our teachers return on August 10 for a week of pre-planning. On August 14, the children and their parents are invited for our annual "Meet and Greet." Students will meet their new teachers, attend a blessing of the school year, and enjoy a Popsicle with their classmates on the playground. The first day of class is August 17. We have an exciting school year planned! I am so thankful to have Northside Drive Baptist and its beautiful campus as the home of the Preschool.

Contact the Preschool office at 404-237-9060 or visit our website at ndbcpreschool.org.

Church Council*

The next Church Council meeting will be Monday, August 17, at 7 PM, in the Art & Soul Classroom, #202.

*The Church Council consists of the Moderator, Senior Pastor, Treasurer, and Church Clerk, the chairs of the Diaconate, the Finance, Personnel, and Nominating Committees, the Adult Education, Children's, Communications/Technology, Facilities Management, Grounds, Landscaping, Hospitality, Marketing, Membership Development, Memorial Gifts, Missions, Preschool Liaison, Worship & Music, and Youth Ministry Teams, and the Auxiliary Triple E.

Deacon Ordination: August 23, 2015

NDBC will honor the tradition of "the laying on of hands" as we ordain two new deacons. Parker Holloway and Jill Johnson will be ordained during the morning worship service in the NDBC Chapel on August 23.

As has been our tradition over the last several years, all of the congregation will be invited to participate in this time of blessing, celebration, and "setting-apart" for ministry.

Parker Holloway, along with his wife, Stacie, and two children: Paxton and Emma, have been part of NDBC since August 2013. He and his family reside in the Smyrna area. Parker is an anesthetist with Northside Anesthesiology Consultants, practicing throughout the Northside Hospital System.Parker grew up attending Antioch Baptist Church where he served as pianist from 1998-2005. One of the greatest opportunities he has at NDBC is to worship with and through the gift of music.

Jill Johnson joined Northside Drive Baptist Church in early 2014. She has two daughters, Maggie (4) and Sydney (2, turning 3 on August 22). Jill is a native of Irmo, South Carolina (a small town outside of Columbia) and received her BA in English from Clemson University in 2000. Jill moved to Atlanta in 2003 after graduating from law school at The University of South Carolina. She practices in the business and construction litigation group at the Atlanta law firm of Chamberlain, Hrdlicka, White, Williams & Aughtry. In her (very limited!) free time, Jill enjoys reading, running, and traveling.

Missions & Music
Like last summer, some Sundays will be music focused, where children will have the opportunity to sing fun songs and learn about Bible stories through singing and playing instruments. On other Sundays, children will learn about taking God's love beyond our church walls and sharing Jesus with people all over our world. We'll hear about several families and how they responded to God's call to become missionaries. We can't wait to see our Preschool-5th Grade aged children in Missions & Music this summer! We'll meet in room #102 next to the Nursery every Sunday at 9:30 AM, until August 30. If you have any questions, please contact mike@northsidedrive.org.

God Stories

The Heart of the Bible

A Summer Sermon Series

June 7-September 6

The Bible is a library of stories.  Even when it lists the Ten Commandments or Eight Beatitudes, each list fits within a story; and each story fits within God's Big Story of Love and Grace. Some of the Summer Sermons will include: David and Goliath, King David's Dance Fever, and How to Dust Off Your Shoes When You Get Rejected

Like the rabbis say, "God created humans, because God loves stories."
