Pastoral Reflections by James Lamkin "Bedford's Touch"
It is not every day that a pioneering cardio-vascular surgeon and charter member of Northside Drive Baptist Church, dies. Dr. Bedford Davis was both; and truly, he was one of a kind. Before leaving each pastoral visit with him, I prayed and held his hands. When it came time for his funeral, two weeks ago, I used that as the guiding metaphor for his eulogy/homily: Healing Hands. As a Renaissance Man with an insatiable curiosity, his hands did just about everything: compose music, perform music, carve wood, polish rocks, build boats, sail ships, write books, and yes...do surgery. His hands carried Operation Touch to Honduras in the 60's. In doing so, Bedford drafted NDBC youth and taught them to scrub up and help out with medical operations. His hands performed the first live TV open-heart surgery in Atlanta; and his cheerleader at Baptist Hospital was Rev. Louie D. Newton (known as "King Louie" among area clergy). In my experience, some docs are treaters of symptoms; yet, others are healers of persons. Bedford was the later. You could tell by the way he used his hands. Years ago, Dr. Lewis Thomas, the late dean of Yale Medical School, observed that although younger physicians today are superbly trained, they often lack two essentials. First, since they were the children of the antibiotic era, most have never been sick and thus cannot truly empathize with their gravely ill patients. Second, in focusing on the tools and techniques of scientific medicine, they have forgotten that all healing derives from human touch. "The doctor's oldest skill in the trade was to place his [or her] hands on the patient," Thomas said. "People who are sick long to be touched.... Medicine is no longer the laying on of hands; it is more like the reading of signals from machines." As I think about it, Operation Touch was not limited to Honduras in the 60's; it was how Bedford lived his life among our lives. This heart doctor touched our hearts. From serving as the pianist when the church gathered at Morris Brandon School during the early years, to the Allen-Davis Church School Class to which he lended his name in his later years...he touched us. Already, I miss his stories, his smile, his steel-trap memory, his humor...and his touch. |
Missions & Music Children's Summer Church School Like last summer, some Sundays will be music focused, where children will have the opportunity to sing fun songs and learn about Bible stories through singing and playing instruments. On other Sundays, children will learn about taking God's love beyond our church walls and sharing Jesus with people all over our world. We'll hear about several families and how they responded to God's call to become missionaries. We can't wait to see our Preschool-5th Grade aged children in Missions & Music this summer! We'll meet in room #102 next to the Nursery every Sunday at 9:30 AM, until August 30. If you have any questions, please contact mike@northsidedrive.org. |

God Stories
The Heart of the Bible
A Summer Sermon Series
June 7-September 6
The Bible is a library of stories. Even when it lists the Ten Commandments or Eight Beatitudes, each list fits within a story; and each story fits within God's Big Story of Love and Grace. Some of the Summer Sermons will include: David and Goliath, King David's Dance Fever, and How to Dust Off Your Shoes When You Get Rejected.
Like the rabbis say, "God created humans, because God loves stories."

Touching Taliaferro with Love June 22-26, 2015 Mark your calendars! Since 2007, Northside Drive has led a week of Vacation Bible School/summer camp in Taliaferro County, one of the poorest and most neglected areas of Georgia. Supported through individual churches and the Georgia Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, TTWL provides summer camp activities for children in first through fifth grades. If you can tell a Bible story, direct a craft activity, lead in recreation, or guide a group of lively children from one activity room to another, then there is a place for you to share your talents and love with the children in Taliaferro County. While it's great to have volunteers who participate all five days, you are welcome for any amount of time that fits your work or family schedule. For more information contact Susan Harlan, Rhonda Harris, or Barbara Atchley. |
