"Preaching...It's a Miracle"

I spend a lot of time pondering, praying, and preparing when it comes to preaching. I figure, when preaching actually happens, it is a miracle. Given the number and volume and persuasion of the many voices in our hearts and heads, the probability of hearing a word from God is like listening to a whisper during a tornado. Plus, the mouth of the preacher and the ears of the listeners can clog up.

Yet, God is remarkably resourceful. God's voice has great range. Joy, pain, love, depression, longing and languish, shouts and silence...all are languages available to the Holy One. And yes, God even speaks in the language of absence.

Fredrick Beuchner is an oft quoted patron saint of NDBC. Here's a piece from his book, Telling the Truth:

"...the preacher speaks both the word of tragedy and the word of comedy because they are both the truth and because Jesus speaks them both.... Sin and grace, absence and presence, tragedy and comedy, they divide the world between them and where they meet head on, the Gospel happens. Let the preacher preach the Gospel of their preposterous meeting as the high, unbidden, hilarious thing it is."

Somewhere, between pulpit and pew, between heart and head, between our narrow biases and God's broad love, preaching walks the weekly high-wire of truth without a net. Against all odds, a miracle sometimes happens: we hear and we are heard, and so is God.

Missions & Music

Children's Summer Church School

On Sunday, May 31, we kicked off our Children's Summer Church School program, "Missions and Music!" Like last summer, some Sundays will be music focused, where children will have the opportunity to sing fun songs and learn about Bible stories through singing and playing instruments. On other Sundays, children will learn about taking God's love beyond our church walls and sharing Jesus with people all over our world. We'll hear about several families and how they responded to God's call to become missionaries. We can't wait to see our Preschool-5th Grade aged children in Missions & Music this summer! We'll meet in room #102 next to the Nursery every Sunday at 9:30 AM, until August 30. If you have any questions, please contact mike@northsidedrive.org.

God Stories

The Heart of the Bible

A Summer Sermon Series

June 7-September 6

The Bible is a library of stories.  Even when it lists the Ten Commandments or Eight Beatitudes, each list fits within a story; and each story fits within God's Big Story of Love and Grace. Some of the Summer Sermons will include: David and Goliath, King David's Dance Fever, and How to Dust Off Your Shoes When You Get Rejected.

Like the rabbis say, "God created humans, because God loves stories."

NDBC Book Club book club

June 17, from 1-2:30 PM

Fellowship Hall

A book review of The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion by Fannie Flagg will be Wednesday, June 17, at 1 PM in the Fellowship Hall. Marjorie Rives will be the facilitator and Jane Lamkin the hostess. Bring your lunch; dessert and beverages will be furnished.

Touching Taliaferro with Love TTWL

June 22-26, 2015

Mark your calendars!

Since 2007, Northside Drive has led a week of Vacation Bible School/summer camp in Taliaferro County, one of the poorest and most neglected areas of Georgia. Supported through individual churches and the Georgia Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, TTWL provides summer camp activities for children in first through fifth grades.

If you can tell a Bible story, direct a craft activity, lead in recreation, or guide a group of lively children from one activity room to another, then there is a place for you to share your talents and love with the children in Taliaferro County. While it's great to have volunteers who participate all five days, you are welcome for any amount of time that fits your work or family schedule. For more information contact Susan Harlan, Rhonda Harris, or Barbara Atchley.

No Church School

& Coffee with the Clergy

We will not have Church School on July 5 (Independence Day weekend), and September 6 (Labor Day weekend). However, the clergy will have coffee and conversation waiting for you in the Parlor (Room 207) at 9:30 AM.

Bylaws Under Review

Our church bylaws provide for periodic review and recommendation to the Church-in-conference of any updates or needed changes to the bylaws. Church Moderator, Don Janney, has appointed a Bylaws Review Committee consisting of Jo Meeks, Chair; Barbara Schroeder; Tom Hicks; David Cook; George Taylor; and Dave Wooten. Please refer any suggestions or proposed updates to any committee member or email Jo Meeks at jolaniermeeks@gmail.com by July 15, 2015. For any questions, please contact Don or Jo.

Gas Turned Off for the Summer

May 21-September 1, 2015

As a cost savings to the church, the gas is turned off in the Spring and turned back on in the Fall. This is part of the summer savings program with Infinite Energy. We will have an electric water heater for use during those months.
