Pastoral Reflections by James Lamkin
"Well...Done!" The Alliance of Baptists has come and gone. I am reflecting on NDBC's Herculean efforts at readying and hosting. In response, I say, "WELL DONE." And I mean both words. WELL. Well is an affirmation of achievement and health. Effusive accolades came from the 370+ registrants that we had done well regarding hospitality and generosity and preparation. Janet Jones, daughter of Tom and Jane Jones, texted me from Charlotte saying she was proud of our church...even from a distance. NDBC members were at their posts and coffee pots. Without them, no one could have found Fellowship Hall. I've previously listed all of the volunteer actions, from vacuuming hallways to scrubbing bathroom floors. I will name names of the many volunteers in a future article. All of the staff worked overtime. Grateful, am I, for the work of Renee, Rose, Mike, Paul, Alyssa, Edith, and Willie. Also, Joleen and Patti from the Preschool staff were there all weekend working hard. For those of you who know the limits of our building, the demands on the staff, and the availability of volunteers, and the variations within our ideology...you know how much of a miracle it was that we did so well. Plus, it poured down rain all weekend! Never did the attendees get to wander our beautiful campus. Never was the renovated Meditation Trail explored. However, the welcoming awning over the office entrance, the renovated stairwell, the Undercroft lighting, and the audio upgrades were noticed and much appreciated. Julian of Norwich, a 14th century mystic, said, "All shall be well; all manner of thing shall be well." Proud am I that God and NDBC made "all manner of thing," well for our Alliance of Baptist weekend. DONE. Not only did we do it well, we are well DONE. Barbara Atchley playfully said, "Tell the Alliance thank you for the honor of hosting...and to never ask us again." Actually, we may have set a new gold standard of hosting; but, now it is in the rear view mirror and we are done. We can get back to the routines of loving God and loving one another. Historian Stephen Ambrose said of Lewis and Clark's expedition west, "It was like going to the moon," but then added, "No, it was worse than that. They had at least seen the moon!" I think NDBC's great challenge of hosting the Alliance was pretty close to the task of the Corps of Discovery. We didn't find a Northwest Passage either, but we did make history. God be praised; and NDBC...well done. |
