Pastoral Reflections
 by Rev. James Lamkin

"Motion Is a Great Deceiver"

     Glen Edwards was a great gift to the world; and he was a great mentor to me. A lean, lanky west Texan, his voice had the pitch of a handsaw on wood, but also it carried the language and lilt of a poet. Speed-up a Carlyle Marney recording, or slow down one of Glen Edwards', and they would sound the same in both poetry and power. Glen has been on the far side of the Jordan for 15 years now; and yet his muse is never far away...part of my low-lying cloud of witnesses.

     He told of anticipating a gift on one of his pastoral anniversaries at a church. He warned his kids, "Whatever they give us, look grateful." Sure enough, at the end of a worship service, the Deacon Chair called all the family forward, and the presentation was made: a camera! And yes, the kids looked grateful.

     That evening, Glen thumbed through the instruction book. It was a fancy camera with several buttons and dials, plus a brand new feature: a self-timer (circa: early '60's). "No need for expensive portraits anymore," the manual said, "now you can take your own photo using the built-in self-timer." However, the claim came with a disclaimer: "But, you may not look as good as you expect," it noted, "because motion is a great deceiver." When we see ourselves in the mirror, we're in motion. We comb our hair and put on make-up. However, spoiler alert: a photo "stops you still."

     Motion is a great deceiver. Sounds like a Lenten truth on the way to Holy Week. Shadows lengthen and the cross looms. Lent hits the brakes on our frantic pace and we are faced with a motionless self-portrait...ripe enough for confession, and porous enough for grace.

     Palm Sunday begins the final leg of the parade route. 'Twill be festive. Palm branches for everyone! Kids and choir will circle the congregation. Easter's coming...but we'll have to go through a graveyard to get there.

     In the meanwhile, we wander through the week in liturgical slow motion. We pause at the foot of the cross and look into a mirror of hurt. Since motion is a great deceiver, we tarry awhile on Good Friday; but we do not fear. We've read ahead. Easter's coming.

A Hymn Break

     On March 9, I headed to Washington DC for Advocacy in Action---an event hosted by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. A group of about 50 Baptist ministers and seminarians made our way to the hill to speak to our representatives. Of course, we spoke with aides, but that did not stop us from talking about predatory lending, comprehensive immigration reform, and better practices in the foster care system.

     My final stop was to Representative John Lewis' office. Jamila, Lewis' legislative director, led us into his office---which doubled as a Civil Rights museum of sorts. The walls were filled with pictures of his friends---the "Big Six"---who fought alongside him in the Civil Rights Movement. My favorite picture on the wall was one of Lewis and Coretta Scott King sitting on grass taking a break from walking to Montgomery. Jamila told me the two would lead people in a hymn during breaks. Fifty years later our country celebrated the walk brave clergy men and women took in hopes of a better world. Their path was dangerous, but they walked it anyway.

     They walked hand-in-hand day and night stopping for breaks and singing hymns in hopes to encourage one another to keep walking. At the halfway mark through this Lenten journey I feel like I need a walking break. I need a friend to sit and hum a hymn with me. We are at the part of Lent where we can just see Easter on the horizon. In the shadow of the Ferguson investigation, awaiting news of Kelly Gissendaner's fate, Georgia SB 129, and seminary classes, I am reminded every Sunday in the midst of Lent to stop, sing a hymn, and remember that Easter is coming. James spoke about Sundays during Lent being small glimpses of Easter. The saints around me in the pews remind me of this. So we continue our journey together, singing a hymn, and walking toward Easter in the hopes of transformation. Lent reminds us of our humanity, of the world around us, and of injustice. My hope for this year's Lenten journey is that I continue to be transformed and become a better advocate for the community around me, and may we continue our faith journey together toward God's kingdom.

The Stations of the Cross will be in the NDBC Chapel throughout the Lenten Season. Simply follow the instructions attached to the walls and walk the Way of the Cross.

Holy Week

Holy Week @ NDBC

March 29: Palm Sunday - 11:00 AM, Worship

       Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday. On this day we remember Jesus' "Triumphal Entry" into Jerusalem riding on the back of a donkey. The Gospel writers vary on the timing of the event and even its meaning and scope. Some say cloaks were tossed on the road, others say "leafy limbs," and John's Gospel speaks of "palm branches."

       The 11:00 AM worship service will begin with a Processional Hymn as the children, youth, choir and ministers enter waving palm branches. It is a festive day, though a penultimate one. The joy of celebrating the Christ who reigns, will soon be followed by the juxtaposed image of the Christ who has come to die. The shadow of the cross reaches all the way back to Palm Sunday.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
April 2: Maundy Thursday - 6:45 PM, A Service of Tenebrae
     The 6:45 PM service of Maundy Thursday in the Chapel remembers Jesus' last supper with his disciples. To them he gave the commandment to "love one another." Thus, Maundy Thursday is from the Latin, Dies Mandati, or Day of the Mandate. In this quiet evening service we observe a solemn communion service at the rail and own the darkness within ourselves and our need for grace.
     It is a Northside Drive tradition to end the Maundy Thursday service with The Office of Tenebrae (Shadows). There are eight scripture readings. The candles in the Passion Cross and on the Chancel will be snuffed. The service will end in darkness.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

April 3: Good Friday - "Noon Until Three"

The seven last words of Christ.

Homilies presented by NDBC congregants.

     This is the most somber of all services. One Gospel writer comments that as Jesus died on the cross, "there was darkness from noon until three." Thus, the sanctuary will be open during this time for any who want to spend the afternoon in worship and reflection.

     The Noon Until Three service contains seven rhythms focused on the seven last words of Christ (a composite from the four Gospels). Each rhythm lasts about twenty minutes and includes a tolling bell, a scripture reading, instrumental music, a brief homily, a prayer, and silence. It is "come and go" or feel free to "come and stay."

Steve Sheeley...12:05 PM, "Father forgive them..."

Mary Ann Hickman...12:30 PM, "Today, thou shalt be with me..."

JD Granade...12:55 PM, "Woman, behold thy son!"

Alyssa Aldape...1:20 PM, "My God, my God why...?"

Karen Massey...1:45 PM, "...I am thirsty."

Dan Tatum...2:10 PM, "It is finished."

Jill Johnson...2:35 PM, "Into thy hands..."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
April 5: Easter Sunday Worship - @ 11:00 AM
     What a day of rejoicing it will be! On this day we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The choir offers joyous and celebrative music; and before we go, as always, there will be a congregational singing of The Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

A Word About Bad Weather and the Church snow-shovel.jpg

     As a rule of thumb, we will not cancel worship services on Sunday morning except under the most extreme weather conditions. Members are urged to use their own good judgment as to whether they should attempt to make the trip. Should inclement winter weather cause the cancellation of a service, here is the plan:

1) The ministers and the moderator will make the decision.

2) The ministers and the moderator will notify the deacons.

3) The ministers will email all those on the church's email list, and place a notification on the church's voice mail (if electricity and phone service are available).

4) The deacons will call members who need to be notified, but do not have email.
