NORTHSIDE NOTES: November 12, 2014
Pastoral Reflections
  by Rev. James Lamkin

A Pastoral Epistle...

The news of Flora Carswell's death has been heavy for our congregation. For many years she has been a non-anxious presence in a space and time where there is anxiety aplenty. Youngish parents have relished her calm, effusive love for their children. She was a kid magnet and almost magical.

Several church leaders have been in conversation dealing with our grief and working with Flora's family offering care and love.

First, the funeral for Flora will be at Antioch Baptist Church on Monday, November 17, 2014, at 11 AM. The address is 466 Northside Drive, NW, Atlanta, GA, 30318. Flora was a member of this church; also, it was where we had the funeral for her daughter, Queen Acree. I'm sure her cousin, Dr. Lawrence Carter, Dean of the MLK Chapel at Morehouse will also participate in the funeral.

Second, the arrangements are being handled by Willie A. Watkins Funeral Home, 1003 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd, Atlanta, GA, 30310.

Third, we will have a memorial service for Flora at Northside Drive Baptist Church very soon. The goal will be to have it at a time that most NDBC members could attend; also, we are inviting her family. At present, the time that's been selected is Sunday, December 7, 2014. Probably, there will be a light breakfast available for folk 9:30-10 AM in the Fellowship Hall where we can visit with one another and the family. Then, go to the Chapel for a Memorial Service 10-10:30 AM; then, on to worship in the Sanctuary at 11 AM. There are plenty of Church School and Advent II logistics to work-out, but we'll begin here as we think about celebrating Flora's legacy.

Fourth, I've heard questions from several parents who have kids in our nursery and preschool. Flora was beloved; and her death was abrupt. She worked joyfully one Sunday; then eight days later, she died. These parents are wondering how to speak to their kids about Flora's death.

This will be a challenge; but will be a challenge wrapped-in the grace of God and a loving church. We will help one another through it. I will be addressing this question in Sunday's sermon; and the notes will be emailed to the parents. Also, I will send some suggestions before Sunday. Plus, already, our preschool workers, grandparents, clergy, and others are communicating on how best to help.

In the meanwhile, Timeka Acree Haney, Flora's granddaughter, receives emails: trahaney@icloud.com. Email her. Send a picture of Flora...or maybe a child's drawing of Flora loving our kids. And send me stories. I've been asked to say words at the funeral...and I'd like to carry along some of yours. (And thanks for the stories you've already sent.)

I can still feel Flora's embrace and her words of welcome to me each week: "Hey Rev!" Bet you can feel her hugs, too.

Poinsettia Orders* poinsettias.jpg

November 23-December 7

It has long been our tradition at Northside Drive to give poinsettias each Christmas in honor/memory/thankfulness for our friends and family. This year our annual Poinsettia display will be in place on Sunday, December 14. After the service on December 14, you will be able to take your memorial Poinsettia home to enjoy throughout the Christmas season. Each Poinsettia plant is only $20. Order envelopes are available in the Narthex for your use-simply fill it out & drop it in the offering plate. Or call Rose Hidlay at 404-237-8621 with the number of Poinsettias you wish to give, the memorial details, and mail your check to the church office. The deadline for orders is December 7.

*U.S. tax regulations do not allow us to offer contribution credit for Easter & Christmas plants because the plants are returned to the giver.

Hanging of the Green

& the first Sunday of Advent

Sunday, November 30, 2014

In the NDBC Narthex & Sanctuary, at 9:30 AM

You're invited to our annual Hanging of the Green Service Sunday, November 30. This is always a special service marking the beginning of the Advent Season. In lieu of Church School we will gather in the Narthex at 9:30 AM for fellowship and refreshments followed by reflections on the season and special music as we decorate the Sanctuary. Plan to bring greens from your garden (holly, magnolia, evergreens, etc.) to help adorn our sacred space.

Parents: This will be a family-friendly service. Children will be invited to carry greenery into the Sanctuary, hang Chrismons, and gather around the tree for a special song with Kurt Thomas. Childcare will also be provided for up to age 5; however, we hope all parents will bring their children to this special service.
