Pastoral Reflections by Rev. James Lamkin "Holy Cow!"
There once was a calf named Lottie Moon. This may surprise you...especially if you grew-up like I did in the Glory Days of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Back in the day, Lottie Moon was an offering received during the Christmas season. The money was used for "foreign" missions. It was named after a woman who went to China as a missionary. Also, the offering had an Easter counterpart, Annie Armstrong. These were the closest things we had to holy seasons (not counting Vacation Bible School and Dinner-on-the-Grounds). But, back to the cow story. Clyde Fant used to tell about the Pendletons, a west Texas cattle ranch family. There were no hired hands at the ranch, just the Pendletons, a couple in their seventies, who worked from sun-up to sundown. Times were tough; and the cash flow, unpredictable. So they invented a way of saving money for causes they believed in and essentials they anticipated. They named their cows by need. One was New Rug. Another was New Pick-up. I think New Stove was the cute one. When the cows were sold at market, the money met the need that the name intended. So, yes Virginia, there was a calf named Lottie Moon. By the time the pastor left the church, he had met Lottie II and Lottie III. This was an ongoing sacrifice (sorry) because the Pendleton's loved missions. Each Lottie could have been named, A Lot More Stuff! But they valued foregoing some things so that they could give generously to other things, like the church's mission ministry. Liz and I are not cattle ranchers with intentionally named Baptist bovines. But we do place high priority on church ministries and church missions which come out of our values rooted in Christian community. We set aside at least a tithe and give it. What we call "income" is on loan from God. We are its stewards. So we name part of our income. We call it: The 2015 Budget Pledge to NDBC. We invite you to join us. Or you could just name a prize heifer, Holy Cow...and do so for God's sake. |
