NORTHSIDE NOTES: October 29, 2014
Pastoral Reflections
  by Rev. James Lamkin

"Partly Cloudy"

With All Saints Sunday coming in just four days, I am thinking of a biblical phrase that describes the saints of God who have gone before. The Bible calls them: a cloud of witnesses.
I have witnessed this cloud and breathed its sacred air. Some days it hangs lower than others...like it did at my family reunion a few years ago.

My great-grandparents had ten kids. My grandfather was the eldest. The tradition was birthed that each of the ten would take turns hosting the annual reunion at the epicenter of "all things Lamkin" in Ansley, LA, at the old Prospect Church. It was used by both Methodists and Baptists on alternating Sundays. (Too bad that idea has passed!)

Prospect Church has slatted pews: four boards on the bottom, three up the back, and as Grady Nutt used to say, "In between, you are on your own!" The building has no electricity or plumbing. Never has. But it never is lonely. In the front are shady, pastoral oak trees. On the side are my family's graves.

Just after my father died, it was our bunch's time to do the hosting. We brought pictures. Told stories. Asked questions. Laughed and lamented. I led the singing of Amazing Grace out of the shaped-note hymnal that came with the church. Then we had communion.

But communion was not in the building. It was outside 'neath the shady red oak trees on permanent tables heavy laden with potato salad, fried chicken, deviled eggs, pecan pie, and probably a version of Uncle Bill's "Yum-Yum Yams."

Most of us have moved away from the tiny saw-mill town of our family's birth. We now live busy lives in big cities at frantic paces. But we come back to Prospect to connect with cousins, to celebrate communion with God and our family's story, to walk amongst the tombstones, and to remember Uncle Fred and the farm...also to breathe in the thick-humid-Louisiana air of the cloud of witnesses who have gone before us and still are a part of us.

This cloud resides at Prospect Church, but not only there. I see it rolling in Northside Drive Baptist on many Sundays...especially All Saints Sunday.

The cloud of witnesses is never far off, though our awareness of it may be. For me, most days are partly cloudy...except for All Saints Sunday. That day, I'm socked in with sacred hope.

"What a Difference a Year Makes"

I come from a line of youth ministers. My grandfather was the "young people's teacher" at his church in South Texas and my dad was a Youth Minister while he was in seminary. From ages 4 to 12, my summers consisted of car washes, youth camps, and youth hangout nights. I loved it! Getting to hang out with cool older kids---what's not to love? I remember dad coming back from youth camp and sleeping for three days straight. I didn't get it. Why did camp make him so sleepy? Fifteen years later I carry on the tradition and I carry it on proudly.
The first of October marked my one year anniversary as the Director of Youth Ministry here at NDBC. My, how time flies! I am a history "nerd" and I love thinking about "this day in history" stuff so I found myself looking at my "this time in history" with the church. I was nervous the youth wouldn't like me. What if they don't get my jokes? What if they refused a high-five? Have you seen anything more cringe worthy than a person's high-five left hanging? We've had some good times, me and our Youth. Movie nights, lock-ins, Moravian Lovefeasts, and some pretty great inside jokes. This is not to say I haven't been left hanging with a high-five or two, but I'll live.

In the past year, I have seen them grow both physically (I have accepted that all of them will be taller than me) and spiritually. Their sense of wonder and kindness keep me hopeful for the future of the church, and I am glad we get to continue on this spiritual journey together. From those first Sundays filled with awkward getting-to-know-you silence to the not-so-silent ones. I am thankful. Thanks be to God for youth!

Fall Wednesday Night Bible Study

Suffering and Glory: A Study of 1 Peter

 Led by Cyndi Vander Ven

September 10-November 19

@ 6:30 PM, Room #202

The Apostle Peter wrote this epistle to a church facing serious trials. Understandably, they focused on the suffering that had beset them. At times, we also have difficulty with spiritual myopia: the inability to see beyond the immediate to the glory God promises. Are suffering and glory only the provenance of persecuted churches? Just what does Peter describe as suffering? What glory does he reveal, and is it meant for us? What is to be our focus? And just where does the "name it and claim it" gospel fit into Peter's story? Follow the thread of these two themes throughout 1 Peter and see how the grace of God is revealed in both.

CALLAWAY CUP RESULTS

Congratulations to Jordan Clark, winner of the Callaway Cup in its 15th year.

Jordan bested second place finisher, Hartwell Dew, and joined Hartwell as a two-time winner of the highly coveted Callaway Cup. The tournament organizer chose not to recognize a senior division winner as that described all of this year's participants. Closest to the pin recognitions went to Jordan Clark and Hal Meeks, and long drive award also went to Meeks (who only won because his shot found the fairway). JB Gilbert won longest club head toss, accomplishing a 200+ yard drive and a 50+ yard launch of the club head on the same swing. Yes, Chuck Stines was out of town this year.
