Pastoral Reflections by Rev. James Lamkin
"Bells and Budgets" Below is an artist's rendition of our Handbell choir from last Sunday. The artist is our own, Sydney Milligan! Her momma, Sarah Milligan, sent it to me. I shared it with the Handbell choir. We loved it! Sydney's got talent. Note the musical notes floating into God's good air. Plus, the blue table coverings, plus the bells raised high, plus the colors. There's so much life in it...maybe even smiles! Wow. Thank you Sydney. Her art reminds me of last Sunday's epistle lesson, the one where the Apostle Paul says, "Your faith has rung out." Since I am a Handbell ringer, that line caught my eye. The early church's witness of the love of Christ was like a Handbell choir ringing-out their witness of hope in their hearts. On this very night, October 22, 2014, we vote to "aspire" (as Jack Guynn has taught us) as we choose to pledge next year's church budget. The image of a Handbell choir fits our stewardship pledging campaign very well. First, only you can ring your part. You may have the biggest bell or the smallest...but it is in your hands. Only you can give what only you have; and for the choir to work, each of us must do our part. Second, we are in this together. A Handbell choir requires commitment. With all the traveling and busy schedules between the Handbell choir members, there are only about five Sundays in the whole year when all of us can be in the sanctuary at 11 AM on Sundays. But we do what we commit to do. Giving through the church budget takes a similar choice and commitment. Liz and I do that. And I am asking you to do the same. I feel the joy and energy in Sydney's drawing. As "the church on the hill," we joyfully and energetically sound-out the Gospel through the life of our congregation. By giving through our church ministry and mission based budget, we ring like a bell; and we give glory to God.

Fall Wednesday Night Bible Study
Suffering and Glory: A Study of 1 Peter Led by Cyndi Vander Ven September 10-November 19 @ 6:30 PM, Room #202 The Apostle Peter wrote this epistle to a church facing serious trials. Understandably, they focused on the suffering that had beset them. At times, we also have difficulty with spiritual myopia: the inability to see beyond the immediate to the glory God promises. Are suffering and glory only the provenance of persecuted churches? Just what does Peter describe as suffering? What glory does he reveal, and is it meant for us? What is to be our focus? And just where does the "name it and claim it" gospel fit into Peter's story? Follow the thread of these two themes throughout 1 Peter and see how the grace of God is revealed in both. Fall Wednesday Night Bible Study will not be meeting on October 22, due to Church-in-conference that night at 6:45 PM.
