"Fitly Spoken"

I suppose one could go for weeks before coming across the word fitly. It's not on web pages or blogs; not in email or newspapers (though, I bet it is in my college textbook on Shakespeare).
It is in the Bible...right there in the inerrant King James Version, just like God wrote it! Proverbs 25:11 says, "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver."

Fitly means, "In a proper manner or place or time."

Given this definition, there are few fitly words these days. Many words are inappropriate. They don't fit and are said at the wrong place, at the wrong time, and in the wrong way. Of the millions of dollars spent on political ads during this election season, I'm not sure there's even one fitly word in the whole bunch.

"Fitly speech" is nearly extinct...but not yet...not at Northside Drive.

Listen around the church. A leader will say, "I see the issue this way...," and suddenly everyone in the room gets clear. A deacon at the table will say, "Regarding the topic, I believe this...," and each person then speaks his or her mind in a non-willful way. Or, "I've prayed for discernment, and here is where I stand."

When words come from an authentic place in a trustworthy way it is like a tuning fork sounding-out Middle C; knowing the pitch, the whole orchestra tunes to it.

Like the writer of Proverbs said: appropriate, insightful words are golden apples on a silver tray. They are treasures.

I am grateful for NDBC's lay leaders. For the most part, they are a fitly folk (though some have been known to throw a fit from time to time). Even at routine, common, garden-variety committee meetings, I hear faithful and fitting words coming from hearts and heads. When I hear a level of insight matching a level of need...when I see passion seasoned with consultation...when I hear a prayer naming that there is a Holy Other in the room...I give thanks, for these are good words, discerning words. They are fitly words.

Fall Wednesday Night Bible Study

Suffering and Glory: A Study of 1 Peter

 Led by Cyndi Vander Ven

September 10-November 19

@ 6:30 PM, Room #202

The Apostle Peter wrote this epistle to a church facing serious trials. Understandably, they focused on the suffering that had beset them. At times, we also have difficulty with spiritual myopia: the inability to see beyond the immediate to the glory God promises. Are suffering and glory only the provenance of persecuted churches? Just what does Peter describe as suffering? What glory does he reveal, and is it meant for us? What is to be our focus? And just where does the "name it and claim it" gospel fit into Peter's story? Follow the thread of these two themes throughout 1 Peter and see how the grace of God is revealed in both.

Fall Wednesday Night Bible Study will not be meeting on October 22, due to Church-in-conference that night at 6:45 PM.
