Pastoral Reflections by Rev. James Lamkin"The Salvation Combo" Norman Maclean, author of A River Runs through It, said, "Agony and hilarity are both necessary for salvation." He ought to know. Maclean was a PK...a preacher's kid. Growing up in the parsonage of his strict Presbyterian father, he had to look for, and managed to find, humor between the stern cracks of life. If you have read the book or seen the movie, you found yourself wading into Montana's Blackfoot River; and before you knew it, you were beneath the cold snow melt water, baptized into Norman's profound grief and buoyant joy. Yes, agony and hilarity both knead the soul. They ready it to soak-in and soak-up a salvation beyond itself. From my pastoral perch, I observe the ritual and rhythm of Northside Drive Baptist Church. Sitting amongst the deacons this past Sunday reminded me of the drama within the walls of our congregation. Job loss. Diagnoses. Discernment. Caretaking. Caregiving. Birth. Death. And all points in-between. Deacons traffic in big stuff! Yet, among their heavy conversations was also the "salvation combo" of Norman Maclean. In one hand they held the agonies that many in the congregation face; in the other, they held the hilarity of a quirky flock that has an absolute hoot whenever we get together. So...last Sunday afternoon's Diaconate meeting...I think it was somehow necessary for salvation. |

Fall Wednesday Night Bible Study
Suffering and Glory: A Study of 1 Peter Led by Cyndi Vander Ven September 10-November 19 @ 6:30 PM, Room #202 The Apostle Peter wrote this epistle to a church facing serious trials. Understandably, they focused on the suffering that had beset them. At times, we also have difficulty with spiritual myopia: the inability to see beyond the immediate to the glory God promises. Are suffering and glory only the provenance of persecuted churches? Just what does Peter describe as suffering? What glory does he reveal, and is it meant for us? What is to be our focus? And just where does the "name it and claim it" gospel fit into Peter's story? Follow the thread of these two themes throughout 1 Peter and see how the grace of God is revealed in both. Fall Wednesday Night Bible Study will not be meeting on October 22, due to Church-in-conference that night at 6:45 PM.

"The Art of Being Northside Drive"
October 4th was a busy day for Northside Drivers!
Knowing that it can be tough to donate time to Habitat when you have young children, Northside Drive volunteers JB, Virginia, Susan H, Syd, Missy, Susan D, Teri and Ken shared their time and love with the children of young adults who wanted to work on the Habitat home! Stories were read, walks were taken, movies were watched and good old fashioned play was enjoyed by all!
Meanwhile volunteers Geneva and Callie, Beth, Kristofer and Karen, Sarah and Keith painted and hammered and caulked and performed all manner of other home building tasks to help toward the completion of our habitat home!
And finally, Gail, Nancy and Susan P (with behind-the-scenes help from others) brought a fabulous lunch for the workers to enjoy!
'Twas a busy day for Northside Drivers, a day we realize what it means to be the Art of Northside Drive.
