NORTHSIDE NOTES: October 1, 2014
Pastoral Reflections
  by Rev. James Lamkin

"Church of the Holy Kaleidoscope"

A dozen Northside Drive members and I went to a church growth workshop in Decatur a few years ago. Since it was a Baptist gathering, we started with food in the Fellowship Hall.

I struck-up a conversation with a woman and her husband at my table. We swapped a few church stories.

"Are you a pastor," she asked?

     "I try," I said.

Mid-conversation, I noticed that the woman was wearing a necklace...and on the necklace was the oddest object: a miniature kaleidoscope.

That's right. It was a small tube with multi-colored glass shards that beautifully refracted the light as it is turned.

You've already know what happened next. I just had to ask. "I guess there's a story behind that?"

"Yes," she said, "I work in a kaleidoscope shop."

(Strange, huh? But, come to think of it, we were in Decatur.)

"What's it like to work in a kaleidoscope shop," I asked?

"Wonderful," she said. "First, really interesting people come in the shop. Second, I'm surrounded by art...beautiful works of art...in colored glass. And third, I get to learn about people, about art, about myself...it's kinda spiritual. "

A long silence was followed by a few bites of baked chicken and green peas.

She then asked me, "So what's it like to pastor Northside Drive Baptist Church?"

"About the same," I said! "First, a variety of people come there. Second, I'm surrounded every Sunday by beautiful art in multi-colored, faceted glass windows. Third, I learn a lot about people and beauty and art and myself...it's almost spiritual."

About that time, the leader tapped her table knife on a tea glass, and the room was called to order.

But I was still thinking about the kaleidoscope shop; and about NDBC.

Over the years, I've watched Father Time twist and turn our congregation as we've lived on Mother Earth. We start life as young toddlers; and if we live to be old, we will toddle, again.

God not only accompanies us on this long and winding road, God is the road. Maybe God is the artist who holds the glass pieces of our lives in holy hands. Our individual pieces collide, but also connect; and beauty happens when the light shines through.

Shepherding Northside Drive is like pastoring the Church of the Holy Kaleidoscope. And come to think of it...it's not almost spiritual, it really is. Thanks be to God.

"Inspired & Inspiring: From NDBC to Asia with Habitat"

I was certainly interested when Beverly Allen first mentioned the idea of presenting my recent Habitat International trips to Triple E and honored when I received the invite from Patti Clark. The two trips to Cambodia and Philippines were predicated on two goals. The first, to experience what Jesus was doing on the other side of the world and through our brothers and sisters there. The second, to glorify God in the difficult, yet rewarding work we would be doing. I must say these goals came to life and I reaped more from these trips than anything else I've ever done.

The people of these countries are beautiful beyond compare and have such distinct and proud cultures it's impossible to illustrate with words. Of course, I had the most fun with all the kids playing Taya (which is tag) and basketball. The food, with its strong influence from surrounding countries, was inclusive of lots of rice and noodles as you would suspect. However, the pork, Korean barbecue, and Kaldereta (a frequent lunch item) were particular favorites!

Looking back, I experienced God and strengthened my faith in a real and tangible way and cannot wait for the next adventure to share with you all.

Children's Choirs

 by Mary Lou Swann

"Statement of Anticipation"

Make a Joyful Noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing!

~ Psalm 100

What a very fun morning I had with the Cherub Choir today! With my new two-to-five-year-old friends, we sang, played, improvised, sat on the floor, sat in chairs, moved around the room, played musical Follow the Leader, sang about God, sang about animals in God's creation, made animal sounds, moved like the animals, sang about Jesus, and had fun in the process. If you happened to be on our hall during our choir time, I imagine it sounded like joyful noise, indeed.

Two weeks into my music ministry at my new church home, I am glad to have worked with the children in both the Celestial Choir of first-through-fifth graders as well as with the younger Cherubs I met with this morning. As to be expected, some children in each of our choirs were a bit shy at first (trying to figure out this very tall lady with the silly song movements) but well into our action song, Rise and Shine and Give God the Glory, Glory, the children were participating,

So, what should the goals of a church children's choir program be? Should the focus be on polished musical products to present in worship or should the goal be to enjoy the fellowship and the process of offering our best to God through joyful music making? In our short time together each week, should we aim for Christian education or music education? Ideally, we should strive for all of these things and it will be a process. I look forward to the journey.

In the meantime, God is at work and He is leading me with the goals to nurture these children, to make our choirs an inviting place to make music, to share the love of Jesus, and to equip the children to serve Him with joyful singing (or whatever noises we make).

     Blessings!

Celebrating New Additions to Church School

Feet pitter-pattered around breakfast tables, down the hallways, and up the aisles. Grins missing one or two teeth shone throughout the Fellowship Hall as teachers called rosters. Heads, arms, and legs bounced with excitement for the day's festivities.

In early September, children, youth, and adults gathered to celebrate the arrival of a new Church School year at the annual Church School Kick-Off. Breakfast casseroles, fruit, and baked breakfast breads lined a wall of the Fellowship Hall. As people finished their feasts, Mike Gregg kicked-off our Church School introductions. We announced the grand opening of the Crib Room, Mother's Room, and Celestial Choir Room. Mary Lou Swann, our new Director of Children's Choirs, expressed her enthusiasm for this year's choirs. Children's Church School Teachers greeted their new students with arms open wide.

During the Church School hour, the sound of voices singing, instruments clanging, and pianos chiming drifted in the air. Eighteen Cherubs, ages 2-5, gathered in semi-circles around Amanda Gregg, merrily mirroring her arm movements. The scent of fresh paint lingered in the re-purposed Room 116, now the Celestial Choir's meeting place. As parents gathered to take their children to worship, mothers oohed and awed over the hospitable Mother's Room. Throughout the worship service, babies explored their new Crib Room.

The Kick-Off day proved itself worthy of celebration. Celebration for new rooms, new students, new teachers, and a new year. In the coming days, let's watch and listen for more reasons to celebrate.

     Let's give thanks.

"A Time of New Beginnings"

September is a time of new beginnings, as our music ensembles resume their regular rehearsal schedules after enjoying some time off during the summer. If you have been considering the possibility of becoming involved in the NDBC music ministry, now would be an excellent time to do so! We are always eager to welcome new members, but especially at this time of year!

Our Sanctuary Choir resumed its regular weekly rehearsal schedule on Wednesday evening, September 3, after taking a nine-week break from the beginning of July through the Labor Day holiday. The choir began singing regularly once again in worship on Sunday, September 7, following their summer break and the Labor Day holiday. Rehearsals occur each Wednesday evening from 7:15 to 8:30 PM in the Choir Room.

The Northside Drive Ringers began rehearsing once again on Sunday, September 7, as they are now preparing to ring in worship in October, November and December.

Our Children's Choirs have met periodically throughout the summer, and they are now rehearsing more frequently as the fall months arrive. Under the very capable leadership of our new Director of Children's Choirs, Ms. Mary Lou Swann, the choirs will be busy as they prepare to sing in worship on a regular basis throughout the school year. Amanda Gregg will continue to direct the Cherub Choir (pre-school/kindergarten), and Mary Lou will direct the Celestial Choir (grades 1-5), in addition to overseeing the entire children's music program. To register your child in one of our children's choirs, please contact Mary Lou Swann at mlswan2@mindspring.com.

Fall Wednesday Night Bible Study

Suffering and Glory: A Study of 1 Peter

 Led by Cyndi Vander Ven

September 10-November 19

@ 6:30 PM, Room #202

The Apostle Peter wrote this epistle to a church facing serious trials. Understandably, they focused on the suffering that had beset them. At times, we also have difficulty with spiritual myopia: the inability to see beyond the immediate to the glory God promises. Are suffering and glory only the provenance of persecuted churches? Just what does Peter describe as suffering? What glory does he reveal, and is it meant for us? What is to be our focus? And just where does the "name it and claim it" gospel fit into Peter's story? Follow the thread of these two themes throughout 1 Peter and see how the grace of God is revealed in both.
