NORTHSIDE NOTES: September 24, 2014
Pastoral Reflections
  by Rev. James Lamkin

"The Craft of Faith"

"Work out your own salvation," says the Epistle lesson for this coming Sunday. Note the words, your own (emphasis mine).
It's like the bumper sticker I heard about in Colorado Springs, CO, protesting James Dobson's political leveraging. It said: FOCUS ON YOUR OWN DARN FAMILY! And the word was not darn.

The writer of Philippians sings a dense, theological but beautiful song about the person of Christ. The accent is on the "mind of Christ" which informs our choices and behaviors.

Then comes the punch line: get to work, working out your own salvation! And...do so with fear and trembling.

I like Eugene Peterson's translation: "Be energetic in your life of salvation, reverent and sensitive before God."

This is the craft of faith.

Living life faithfully is a craft, an art. We are craftspersons and artists. We take our experiences, ponder them through the lens of the Christian Faith, call upon our resources, and then respond as life unfolds.

This is what we do at Northside Drive Baptist Church.

We study the Bible. We pray. We feed hungry people. We worship God. We tend to ill persons. And we do all of this relationally. "For it is God who is at work in all y'all (Steve Sheeley translation). Yes, all y'all is our Christian modus operandi.

We're not much of a seminar church. Not much of, "Five Steps to Getting What You Pray For." Not much on, "How to Be Godly in a Godless World."

But we are big on: spirituality as connection with one another as we work on and work-out our connection with God. That work-out can feel like a wrestling match; other times it's more like a dance floor. Sometimes, as silent as a monk's tomb. Other times, as rowdy as a honky-tonk. Indeed, there is an art to being Northside Drive.

Sunday, September 28, is our Anniversary Sunday. We turn 62. We glance through the rearview mirror. We pray about what is ahead. We party and feast.

We attend to our salvation as we hone our calling, while we cultivate the craft of faith.

Fall Wednesday Night Bible Study

Suffering and Glory: A Study of 1 Peter

 Led by Cyndi Vander Ven

September 10-November 19

@ 6:30 PM, Room #202

The Apostle Peter wrote this epistle to a church facing serious trials. Understandably, they focused on the suffering that had beset them. At times, we also have difficulty with spiritual myopia: the inability to see beyond the immediate to the glory God promises. Are suffering and glory only the provenance of persecuted churches? Just what does Peter describe as suffering? What glory does he reveal, and is it meant for us? What is to be our focus? And just where does the "name it and claim it" gospel fit into Peter's story? Follow the thread of these two themes throughout 1 Peter and see how the grace of God is revealed in both.

Children's Ministry Scribbles Rachel Sherron

Dear Northside Drive Family,

On September 21, 2014, First Baptist Church of Clinton, Tennessee, voted to hire me as their full-time Minister of Children and Young Families. Consequently, this is my letter of resignation as Director of Children's Ministries at NDBC. My last Sunday at Northside Drive will be September 28.

While this decision may seem rushed, rest assured that the Personnel Committee and Children's Ministry Team have already begun preparations for the future of the NDBC Kids' Ministry. During this transitional time, the Children's Ministry Team will continue their ministry to families and children. I am confident in their abilities to nurture this ever-growing ministry. They will need your hands-on help and support in volunteering with children, caring for families, and welcoming newcomers.

Although I look forward to a new opportunity to grow on a professional, spiritual, and personal level, I am sad to leave my Northside Drive home. I reflect on my time here with hope, joy, and gratitude. You genuinely welcomed me to sit with you at Triple E gatherings and showed me how to be a congregation who values children. You invited me to watch your children learn to walk, talk, and express their individuality. You exercised patience as I learned the ropes of being a young minister. Thank you for being you.

Thank you, for the roles you fill, both seen and unseen, in being the community of Northside Drive Baptist Church. Thank you to my colleagues for your friendship, to James and Mike for your guidance. Thank you for the leadership of Walter Grant in the Personnel Committee, Karen Perry in the Children's Ministry Team, and Don Janney as Moderator. I am privileged to call myself a "Northside Driver."

     Love,

     Rachel Sherron
