"Good Stewards of These Good Times"

The words above contain the advice given me by an older member of NDBC last week as he pointed to the newcomers, the number of kids, the energy around children's music, plus the young professionals showing-up in worship and amongst the church these days.

Fortunate, am I, to have such wise advisors among our elders.

I agree on several levels. First, steward is the right word. Jesus used it a lot. A steward is not an owner, just an intermediate caretaker. We tend the shop, for a while, on behalf of another. We think of NDBC as belonging to us. Actually, our church, all churches, and all that is, really belongs to God. We are not possessors, we are stewards...and only for a while.

Second, good stewards. Jesus told stories of caretakers who did sloppy jobs, and contrasted them with stewards who excelled. What differentiated the two was management by trust and faith, rather than fear and anxiety.

Third, "These good times." As the gospel song puts it, "We're just a'passin' through." But while here, how do we do our best with what we've been loaned (our stuff, our property, our money, and our time)? Pretty soon, we must give it all back.

The feeling of good times comes and goes. All living things have life-cycles. In my time with NDBC, I've seen days of plenty and days of want. And I've watched areas of the church fluctuate with the numbers of youth and children and senior adults. And while one group feels good, another group doesn't. Ups and downs are the norm.

But back to these times...these good times now. What a gift! What a responsibility!

On our watch, how shall we be generous and gracious, rather than greedy and grasping? How do we trust our traditions, while trusting God's innovative Holy Spirit (the rascal of the Trinity)?

Autumn is the season when churches ponder such things. We do so physically (building and property), fiscally (budget, pledging, and apportionment), and spiritually (mission, vision, liturgy, calling).

The older member who said, "Good stewards of these good times," was lobbying for the new members and all the presence, joy, and spunk they bring...spunk just like charter members Glenn Allen, Dr. Bedford Davis, and Louise Davis brought to our founding sixty-two years ago next week. Talk about, "Good stewards of good times!"

Fall Wednesday Night Bible Study

Suffering and Glory: A Study of 1 Peter

 Led by Cyndi Vander Ven

September 10-November 19

@ 6:30 PM, Room #202

The Apostle Peter wrote this epistle to a church facing serious trials. Understandably, they focused on the suffering that had beset them. At times, we also have difficulty with spiritual myopia: the inability to see beyond the immediate to the glory God promises. Are suffering and glory only the provenance of persecuted churches? Just what does Peter describe as suffering? What glory does he reveal, and is it meant for us? What is to be our focus? And just where does the "name it and claim it" gospel fit into Peter's story? Follow the thread of these two themes throughout 1 Peter and see how the grace of God is revealed in both.

Celebrating New Additions to Church School Rachel Sherron

Feet pitter-pattered around breakfast tables, down the hallways, and up the aisles. Grins missing one or two teeth shone throughout the Fellowship Hall as teachers called rosters. Heads, arms, and legs bounced with excitement for the day's festivities.

In early September, children, youth, and adults gathered to celebrate the arrival of a new Church School year at the annual Church School Kick-Off. Breakfast casseroles, fruit, and baked breakfast breads lined a wall of the Fellowship Hall. As people finished their feasts, Mike Gregg kicked-off our Church School introductions. We announced the grand opening of the Crib Room, Mother's Room, and Celestial Choir Room. Mary Lou Swann, our new Director of Children's Choirs, expressed her enthusiasm for this year's choirs. Children's Church School Teachers greeted their new students with arms open wide.

During the Church School hour, the sound of voices singing, instruments clanging, and pianos chiming drifted in the air. Eighteen Cherubs, ages 2-5, gathered in semi-circles around Amanda Gregg, merrily mirroring her arm movements. The scent of fresh paint lingered in the re-purposed Room 116, now the Celestial Choir's meeting place. As parents gathered to take their children to worship, mothers oohed and awed over the hospitable Mother's Room. Throughout the worship service, babies explored their new Crib Room.

The Kick-Off day proved itself worthy of celebration. Celebration for new rooms, new students, new teachers, and a new year. In the coming days, let's watch and listen for more reasons to celebrate. Let's give thanks.

Missions Corner

Bags of Hope!

Serving a meal at the Barbara J. Crofton Center is always a truly rewarding experience. On our last visit, Susan Harlan, Susan Pearson, and Barbara Atchley found it to be even more so! Thanks to the hard work of Mona Stines and the sharing of resources by many others, we were able to listen to squeals of delight as the ladies went through the toiletry bags we had brought. Cries of "Pink is my favorite color" and "Oh, I love this blue one" were accompanied by all the ladies receiving a toiletry bag of items that they really seemed thrilled about.

So thank you Mona and everyone who saves their toiletries for us to share. And if you'd like to get in on the fun we will be serving dinner again at the center soon! Stay tuned for details!
