Pastoral Reflections by Rev. James Lamkin"Best Practices" There's a term buzzing about businesses these days. I first heard it about ten years ago while working on David Allen's personal management methods in his book, Getting Things Done.
The notion is: Best Practices. It refers to methods or techniques that consistently help a person or group accomplish particular goals in the most efficient manner. Sports teams want winning seasons. Students need proper study habits. Employees look for ergonomic procedures that make the best use of time and talent. Families need routines to get them from here-to-there while doing this-and-that. Best Practices. Between now and Advent, I will use this lens to look at each Sunday's biblical texts. The result will be a fall sermon series. But first, a disclaimer. The best practices our culture craves naturally involve more money, more power, more security, and more visible success. But those which rise from the biblical texts address different goals. We can't overlook that our faith started with a guy who was murdered in his thirties and taught that the "last will be first," that success will be found in serving "the least of these," and whatever else you do, "love your enemies." Yikes! With that important qualifier on the table, we open our Bibles looking for spiritual practices which "tune" us so that we might live lovingly, truthfully, compassionately, graciously, maturely...and maybe even, at times, holy. These Best Practices include forgiveness, generosity, leadership, focus, prayer, stewardship, love, maturity, resilience, and gratitude. They come from biblical stories about employees that owe a boatload of money, stories about complainers who wander in the wilderness, stories of folk who wonder if their prayers get beyond the ceiling, and people who have so much to be thankful for...that they forget to give thanks. In other words, the Bible deals with a bunch of bumblers who are a lot like Baptists: folk who need practices that help them on the path of discipleship. Soon, the temperature will drop and fall will unfold; and we will practice the presence of God, as one saint said. Perhaps these Best Practices will take us all the way to another holy season... all the way to a little town named Bethlehem. |

Fall Wednesday Night Bible Study
Suffering and Glory: A Study of 1 Peter Led by Cyndi Vander Ven September 10-November 19 @ 6:30 PM, Room #202 The Apostle Peter wrote this epistle to a church facing serious trials. Understandably, they focused on the suffering that had beset them. At times, we also have difficulty with spiritual myopia: the inability to see beyond the immediate to the glory God promises. Are suffering and glory only the provenance of persecuted churches? Just what does Peter describe as suffering? What glory does he reveal, and is it meant for us? What is to be our focus? And just where does the "name it and claim it" gospel fit into Peter's story? Follow the thread of these two themes throughout 1 Peter and see how the grace of God is revealed in both. Missions Corner
Bags of Hope!
Serving a meal at the Barbara J. Crofton Center is always a truly rewarding experience. On our last visit, Susan Harlan, Susan Pearson, and Barbara Atchley found it to be even more so! Thanks to the hard work of Mona Stines and the sharing of resources by many others, we were able to listen to squeals of delight as the ladies went through the toiletry bags we had brought. Cries of "Pink is my favorite color" and "Oh, I love this blue one" were accompanied by all the ladies receiving a toiletry bag of items that they really seemed thrilled about.
So thank you Mona and everyone who saves their toiletries for us to share. And if you'd like to get in on the fun we will be serving dinner again at the center soon! Stay tuned for details!
