"Flawed Families...the Finale"

The Bible doesn't answer questions about families; it evokes them.

I've always wanted to do a sermon series on, "Being a Biblical Family." It's not a bad idea. It has an appealing ring. It can even sell books; and maybe even get an amen.

It's just that there is no family in the Bible you would want to be like!

For instance, The Good Book starts well. On the second page of Genesis it says: "Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh." All true. All good. But, "the man," (Adam) had no mother or father to leave. He and his wife both get envious and get kicked-out of The Garden when they two-timed God.

Then, Adam and Eve's firstborn son got insecure, got jealous, got mad, and then got violent and murdered his own brother.

"The Biblical Family" pretty much goes downhill from there.

By the time Genesis is over, marriage as polygamy is "biblical marriage." Abraham almost kills both of his sons, and leaves one of his wives for dead. Isaac's father-in-law switches daughters on him on his wedding night. Then, his uncle cheats him out of his property.

Mother Sarah manipulated one son to masquerade as the other son to steal her husband's, and their father's, blessing. Then, the cheated brother chases the other brother for years seeking to kill him out of revenge.

Joseph's jealous sibs sell him as a slave and lie to their daddy about his death; then they bury their secret deep as a bone.

Whew. Can I get an Amen?

Yes, the Bible is full of stories about flawed families, poor parenting, and messed-up kids. However, the Bible's biggest story is not about human families. It is about a Holy God.

Against all odds, God redemptively is at work in all of these God-awful families; and the last lines of Genesis leave us with hope: "What you meant for evil," says Joseph, "God meant for God." It was miracle enough that Joseph saved his family; but perhaps the greater miracle was that Joseph, the spoiled brat, got saved. God relentlessly redeems.

So, any take-away's from the Summer Sermon Series Finale?

     1)  There is no perfect family including yours and mine.

     2)  There is no ideal biblical family; humans have been dysfunctional from the beginning.

     3)  God is more redemptive than we are flawed; and biblical family stories inspire faith in God who is bigger than our failures.

     4)  Work at loving; don't worry about not being perfect.

     5)  Give generously, live boundaried, be compassionate, mature hopefully, love God, and trust God.

     6)  And, like as Chris Graham always told me: Let the love in.

Inquiring Minds Want to Know

The slogan of Northside Drive Baptist Church is "inclusive, inquiring, involved." We believe the Christian faith is inclusive and the arms of God are wide, that solid education and the freedom to ask questions is key for discipleship, and that hands-on mission is important to reveal the love of God in the world. I believe NDBC leans into its responsibility to provide solid religious education through captivating Church School classes, special lectures, and stimulating workshops.

The summer Church School lecture series, "Questioning God: Difficult Doctrines of the Church," has expanded upon the challenging and energetic classes from last year's series, "The Future of the Church in a Changing World." Throughout the summer, skilled theologians, led by Dr. Graham Walker of McAfee School of Theology, have led a group of approximately fifty learners into some of the most difficult and perplexing doctrines of Christianity. We have wrestled with the problem of evil in the world, the impact of the humanity and divinity of Christ, and the expansive ideas surrounding creation and evolution. These aren't easy issues and many churches would rather not "question God." However, as an inquiring congregation, we have found that questioning our doctrines this summer has helped us build knowledge and grow our faith.

It is important for us as inquiring minds to know what we believe and why we believe it so we can better live out and share our faith. I am grateful for the Summer Lecture Series, the knowledgeable teachers, and the really good questions being asked by inquiring church members.

Children's Ministry Scribbles

Rachel Sherron  by Rachel Sherron

"A Sight to See"

Children wearing sunscreen-smeared faces hopped onto the church playground, eagerly plunging their hands into sand boxes. Boys jumped along playground forts in t-shirts and swim trunks. Girls ran around kiddie pools with hair pulled up into ponytails, splashing in the water.

These images filled the air at the Kid's Ministry Family Picnic Lunch, hosted on our church grounds at the end of July. The huge magnolia tree shaded us from the bright, mid-morning, yellow sun. Eighteen adults conversed with one another as they relaxed on blankets and beach towels. Seventeen children created imaginary scenarios on the playground and with water toys.

Breezes rustled green grasses and picnic napkins as we sat down to lunch. Some families chomped on homemade sandwiches, while others nibbled on Chick-fil-A chicken nuggets. We shared brownies, cookies, and a strawberry-topped cake. After lunch, one-by-one, children popped up from picnic table seats as if they hadn't ceased their pre-lunch running.

When the morning crept into afternoon, families drifted back home for well-earned naps. Even in their absence, their smiles and laughter lingered among the picnic tables. That day, our families gifted the church grounds with joy, friendship, and love. What a sight for that magnolia tree!

New Director of Children's Choirs

Mary Lou Swann is excited to join the NDBC music ministry as Director of Children's Choirs. Growing up in North Carolina, Mary Lou sang in the children's choir program at First Presbyterian Church, Kinston. When not involved with church activities or musical theater, she could be found in the pool where she was a year-round competitive swimmer or at the piano bench practicing classic  al piano.

A music graduate of Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC, Mary Lou also earned Kodály certification in music education from the Carolina Kodály Institute at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, NC.
Mary Lou currently directs two fourth grade choirs and is accompanist for four other choirs at Woodward Academy Lower School in College Park, GA, where she has taught since 2004. While at Woodward, she has also taught students in grades 3-6.

Prior to being a teacher, Mary Lou enjoyed a 12-year career in marketing and sales with Disney Channel/ABC Cable Networks Group (Walt Disney Company).

At Northside Drive, Mary Lou will be overseeing the Cherub Choir (preschool/kindergarten), which will meet in room 103 and be directed by Amanda Gregg, and Mary Lou will personally direct the Celestial Choir (grades 1-5), which will meet in room 116. Back to School Donations

With the beginning of a new school year, churches and community organizations throughout the state have worked to ensure that children begin with materials needed for their classes. Northside Drive has been part of this effort. We helped provide items like paper, pens, composition books and even some book bags for the children involved in day camp and after school programs in Taliaferro County, Park Avenue Baptist Church (Grant Park area) and The Agape Center (Bolton Road area).

The NDBC Missions Team collects supplies all year long so if you see seventeen cent notebooks, penny pencils, twenty-five cent composition books or closeouts on book bags, please consider making a purchase for Back to School 2015.

Fall Wednesday Night Bible Study

Suffering and Glory: A Study of 1 Peter

 Led by Cyndi Vander Ven

September 10-November 19

@ 6:30 PM, Room #202

The Apostle Peter wrote this epistle to a church facing serious trials. Understandably, they focused on the suffering that had beset them. At times, we also have difficulty with spiritual myopia: the inability to see beyond the immediate to the glory God promises. Are suffering and glory only the provenance of persecuted churches? Just what does Peter describe as suffering? What glory does he reveal, and is it meant for us? What is to be our focus? And just where does the "name it and claim it" gospel fit into Peter's story? Follow the thread of these two themes throughout 1 Peter and see how the grace of God is revealed in both.
