Pastoral Reflections By Rev. James Lamkin "Lagniappe"
As a Louisianan, I grew-up knowing about lagniappe. The word means, "a little something extra." A lot of life comes to us as lagniappe: love we can't earn, grace we can't achieve, and providence one can't choreograph. All lagniappe. Last week's sojourn to Louisiana was just that for me. The reason for my going was to tie-the-knot at Tanner Steins' wedding to Megan in Baton Rouge. 'Twas a wonderful celebration! Under a chuppah, I co-officiated with Megan's rabbi as the couple swapped vows, exchanged rings, pledged pledges, and stomped-the-heck out of a glass. Then, we danced. Mercy, did we dance! On the way to the reception, we rode a trolley car. While in the trolley car, we enjoyed live jazz music with the band on board! The jazz musicians led us from the wedding, through the lobby, onto the sidewalk, and into the trolley. All the while, our fleur de lis umbrellas twirled over our heads while the sounds of When the Saints Go Marching In danced in the humid night air. The greatest joy for me was to watch Mona and Chuck celebrate their sons, Zachary and Tanner, with effusive love, joy, and pride. Lagniappe. While in my home state, I traveled about for a few days. Went to the Jesuit Spirituality Center in Grand Coteau, where I received spiritual direction from Sister Ruth Cowie. Went to Rapides Medical Center in Alexandria where I served as the hospital chaplain for eight years; and I talked with a few old-timers who remembered when all of us would grab a mop and head for the hallway by the levee when the rains came. Went to Pineville to visit friends who mid-wifed me through a divorce; and a local eatery where I would take Emily and Stuart for thin-sliced-sweep-the-kitchen pizza. Then to Ruston where my long-time psychologist friend, Dr. Tony Young, and I tossed a rope over a high tree limb and made a super cool swing for his three year old grandson, Mason. Between the throwing and pulling, we talked-over our lives and how we were beneficiaries of lagniappe love... along with Family Systems Theory and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Finally, I drove by my old home place in Arcadia. The newly upholstered porch swing and the heavy hanging baskets said that a new home lives in the old house. All good. Whenever the Apostle Paul wrote his church friends, more often than not, his first words were lagniappe, "Grace and peace...," he would say. Grace and peace. Gratefully, I say them, too. |

Youth Ministry News By Alyssa Aldape The Big Story At the beginning of August, I attended Selah Vie. It's a retreat put on by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship targeted toward college and graduate level students- or more generally, young Baptists. This is my fifth year at Selah Vie and every year I return spiritually and mentally renewed. One reason is to see fellow young Baptists grow in their faith and in their sense of call. I enjoy hearing stories from their summer experiences and hearing them unconsciously name talents and passions they didn't realize before the summer. The second aspect I love about Selah Vie is getting a glimpse of the bigger picture of God's kingdom. Being an ENFP, it can be difficult at times to see the bigger picture of God's work. I think this is how youth ministry can be at times. A youth minster can worry about attendance, about programming that will catch a youth's eye, and planning events that youth will hashtag "#epic." We get so caught up in the details we miss the bigger picture of authentic youth ministry. Among planning the most epic lock in of all time, it is important as a youth minister to instill in youth a sense of purpose in the bigger tapestry of the church. So as we gear up for another school year, I am excited to see what the fall semester brings for the NDBC youth group. As the youths return from summer camps, family beach trips, and birthday celebrations, I get more excited to hear about their experiences. This semester we will learn to "Echo the Story." From creation to the formation of the church, we will learn about the bigger story and how our own stories fit in with God's story. If you happen to see one our youths in the church halls, be sure to ask them about their summer- I'm sure they have some good stories to share. |
Pastor's Wednesday Morning Bible Study
We meet weekly from 10:30-11:30 AM, in the church's Conference Room. We study the texts selected in the Revised Common Lectionary for the next Sunday. Large print editions are available each week and for the upcoming Sunday. Discussion is deep and wide and lively. All are invited. |
Coffee with the Clergy & NO Church School
We will not have Church School on August 31 (Labor Day weekend). However, the clergy will have coffee and conversation waiting for you in the Parlor (Room 207) at 9:30 AM. |
Back to School Donations
With the beginning of a new school year, churches and community organizations throughout the state have worked to ensure that children begin with materials needed for their classes. Northside Drive has been part of this effort. We helped provide items like paper, pens, composition books and even some book bags for the children involved in day camp and after school programs in Taliaferro County, Park Avenue Baptist Church (Grant Park area) and The Agape Center (Bolton Road area). The NDBC Missions Team collects supplies all year long so if you see seventeen cent notebooks, penny pencils, twenty-five cent composition books or closeouts on book bags, please consider making a purchase for Back to School 2015. |
Thank You Alan Johns & Welcome Mike Bryant... NDBC Organists
We are grateful to Northside Drive member Alan Johns, who donated our new organ in the Chapel and who has served as our organist on a volunteer basis this summer. We recognize Alan for his wonderful donation of the Chapel organ and his talents during our Sunday morning worship services.
On September 1, 2014, we will be welcoming an old friend who will be returning to Northside Drive Baptist Church. Mike Bryant served as our Interim Organist for six months in 2008. Mike has agreed to return as organist to Northside Drive; and his first Sunday will be September 7. Mike and Northside Drive have made a six-month commitment to each other, with the possibility of extending it. Since 1991, Mike has been the Orchestra Director and Choral Accompanist at Holy Innocents' Episcopal School. Mike also has served as the organist at Saint Mark United Methodist Church and Clairmont Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. He has a long and distinguished career as a musician, and we are grateful that he has agreed to come and serve among us.

New Children's Rooms By Rachel Sherron I am pleased to announce that the NDBC Children's Ministry will open three rooms this fall! These rooms include a Mother's Room (Room 109), Celestial Choir Room (Room 116), and Crib Room (next to the Nursery). The Children's Ministry Team believes these rooms will help meet the needs of our growing ministry to children and families. We plan to have the rooms available by September 7. We're excited about this expansion opportunity. We look forward to the ways God will continue to work in our congregation in educational experiences, fellowship activities, and spiritual development. Parents, thank you for sharing your families with our faith community. Teachers and Worship Care Volunteers, thank you for the love and care you pour into our Children's Ministry! Without all of you, this growth opportunity wouldn't be possible. |

Fall Wednesday Night Bible Study
Suffering and Glory: A Study of 1 Peter Led by Cyndi Vander Ven September 10-November 19 @ 6:30 PM, Room #202 The Apostle Peter wrote this epistle to a church facing serious trials. Understandably, they focused on the suffering that had beset them. At times, we also have difficulty with spiritual myopia: the inability to see beyond the immediate to the glory God promises. Are suffering and glory only the provenance of persecuted churches? Just what does Peter describe as suffering? What glory does he reveal, and is it meant for us? What is to be our focus? And just where does the "name it and claim it" gospel fit into Peter's story? Follow the thread of these two themes throughout 1 Peter and see how the grace of God is revealed in both. |
