NORTHSIDE NOTES: August 13, 2014
Pastor's Wednesday Morning
Bible Study

We meet weekly (except for August 13) from 10:30-11:30 AM, in the church's Conference Room. We study the texts selected in the Revised Common Lectionary for the next Sunday. Large print editions are available each week and for the upcoming Sunday. Discussion is deep and wide and lively. All are invited.

Mission Opportunity

On August 16, at 7 PM, the church has an opportunity to help serve a meal at the Barbara J. Crofton Women's Shelter. The shelter is located near the square in Marietta and houses 20-25 women who are working on their recovery from alcohol or drugs. It takes about an hour to ready the food to be served and then to eat with the ladies. I can't tell you what a blessing it is to sit down with them and share a meal and hear some of their stories. If you are interested in helping give Susan Harlan a call at 770-377-3869.

Back to School Donations

With the beginning of a new school year, churches and community organizations throughout the state have worked to ensure that children begin with materials needed for their classes. Northside Drive has been part of this effort. We helped provide items like paper, pens, composition books and even some book bags for the children involved in day camp and after school programs in Taliaferro County, Park Avenue Baptist Church (Grant Park area) and The Agape Center (Bolton Road area).

The NDBC Missions Team collects supplies all year long so if you see seventeen cent notebooks, penny pencils, twenty-five cent composition books or closeouts on book bags, please consider making a purchase for Back to School 2015.

Thank You Alan Johns and
Welcome Mike Bryant...
NDBC Organists

We are grateful to Northside Drive member Alan Johns, who donated our new organ in the Chapel and who has served as our organist on a volunteer basis this summer. We will recognize Alan for his donation and service during our Sunday morning worship service on August 24, 2014.

On September 1, 2014, we will be welcoming an old friend who will be returning to Northside Drive Baptist Church. Mike Bryant served as our Interim Organist for six months in 2008. Mike has agreed to return as organist to Northside Drive; and his first Sunday will be September 7---the day we return to our Sanctuary for our Sunday morning worship services. Mike and Northside Drive have made a six-month commitment to each other, with the possibility of extending it. Since 1991, Mike has been the Orchestra Director and Choral Accompanist at Holy Innocents' Episcopal School. Mike also has served as the organist at Saint Mark United Methodist Church and Clairmont Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. He has a long and distinguished career as a musician, and we are grateful that he has agreed to come and serve among us.

The Chapel Organ's Story

In December 2003, Chris and I journeyed to the Netherlands to meet with three different digital organ builders. It was our first visit to Amsterdam but we quickly found our way via train to two of the builders. Each builder was "on holiday" but generously opened their doors to us.

The final builder, Content Orgels, sent their manager, Aart van de Beek, to pick us up and drive us to their family-owned plant in Ermelo. So we jumped into Aart's Volkswagen and sped down the highway for what proved to be a very nerve wracking hour; Aart was not the best driver. We were met with friendly faces and Oliebollen, a traditional Dutch treat for the holiday season.

After playing different models, we gravitated to the Pastorale 5800. It was love at first site. We chose Canadian maple as the finish, upgraded the action of the keyboard to that of a tracker organ, and changed out the traditional flat pedal board for the standard American version.

After about six months, the organ was shipped to the US but was held in customs for several weeks. Security was still tight after the tragedy of 9/11 and it took many piles of paperwork to get the organ released. Once released, Content Orgels sent one of their personnel to assemble the organ. That is how we came to meet and cherish our friends, Guus de Pagter and his lovely wife, Anneke. We remain friends and hope to go and visit them one day in Holland.

The organ has graced our homes over the last ten years. As with most classical organs, the instrument was designed to serve in worship, concert and learning.

It is my honor to donate this instrument to Northside Drive Baptist Church for its Chapel Organ. I dedicate the organ in loving memory of my sister, Brenda Kathleen Johns, and in honor of the NDBC's on-going commitment to excellence in worship and its practice of inclusiveness for all of God's people.

     "Gloria in excelsis Deo"

Fall Wednesday Night Bible Study

Suffering and Glory: A Study of 1 Peter

Led by Cyndi Vander Ven

September 10-November 19 @ 6:30 PM, Room #202

The Apostle Peter wrote this epistle to a church facing serious trials. Understandably, they focused on the suffering that had beset them. At times, we also have difficulty with spiritual myopia: the inability to see beyond the immediate to the glory God promises. Are suffering and glory only the provenance of persecuted churches? Just what does Peter describe as suffering? What glory does he reveal, and is it meant for us? What is to be our focus? And just where does the "name it and claim it" gospel fit into Peter's story? Follow the thread of these two themes throughout 1 Peter and see how the grace of God is revealed in both.
