Pastoral Reflections By Rev. James Lamkin"Remembering Deacons" My father was a deacon. Evidently, he loved it. He loved serving. He loved the comradery. He loved staying connected with people. He was a deacon when all of the deacons were men; and they marched into worship, single file, all wearing black suits, then sat on the front row until the offering. They looked a little like the Mafia. One would say the offertory prayer while jingling a pocketful of change, and then pass the plate. My father also enjoyed sitting up with the dead. He always volunteered to take the 2-4 AM shift at Congers Funeral Home. (If you do not know about this tradition, ask Barbara Atchley. She grew-up in the family business.) One of our new deacons, Dr. Becky Shoaf, also had a father who was a deacon. She has his deacon ordination certificate hanging on her wall. It is a two-sided frame so that she can see the signatures on the back. Becky reflected on his service...and then anticipated her own. I have Becky's permission to share her memories and hopes with you. He was a big go-get-'em kind of guy. He came to serve as a deacon later in life; but he embraced this service in such a humble manner. He was the first to arrive at the church house, and usually the last to leave. He went over early on Sunday morning to turn on the air conditioner or the heater. He was the last to be served at the family night supper so that everyone else could have whatever they wanted. He was the first one to go if there was sickness in the family or somebody needed help. He always opened his wallet when some stranger showed-up on our doorstep. Despite the urging of his social service minded daughter, he gave them a little cash and always said it's "in Jesus' name." If there was some mechanical need, my daddy would get his son-in-law and say, "Come on Billy, we're going to work on the furnace." I keep Daddy's deacon certificate on the wall so that I'm reminded to be humble in whatever way God may allow me to serve, remembering that if a big, tough guy that I loved so much, could extend his hands and heart in such a tender way...it is important for me to do the same. I pray that I honor God in my work as a deacon. Thank you Becky; and thanks to all of the deacons who serve with your hearts and hands. |

Thank You Alan Johns and Welcome Mike Bryant... NDBC Organists
We are grateful to Northside Drive member Alan Johns, who donated our new organ in the Chapel and who has served as our organist on a volunteer basis this summer. We will recognize Alan for his donation and service during our Sunday morning worship service on August 24, 2014. On September 1, 2014, we will be welcoming an old friend who will be returning to Northside Drive Baptist Church. Mike Bryant served as our Interim Organist for six months in 2008. Mike has agreed to return as organist to Northside Drive; and his first Sunday will be September 7---the day we return to our Sanctuary for our Sunday morning worship services. Mike and Northside Drive have made a six-month commitment to each other, with the possibility of extending it. Since 1991, Mike has been the Orchestra Director and Choral Accompanist at Holy Innocents' Episcopal School. Mike also has served as the organist at Saint Mark United Methodist Church and Clairmont Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. He has a long and distinguished career as a musician, and we are grateful that he has agreed to come and serve among us. ~ The NDBC Personnel Committee |
