Pastoral Reflections By Rev. James Lamkin"Your Presence as Present...a Page from a Deacon's Job Description" The Camino de Santiago gave me a gift. The gift was a heightened awareness of presence. During the late spring and early summer of 2012, I prayed as I walked across Spain for an image to emerge...something I could hold, and would hold me, as I made my way down the 500 mile pilgrim's path. What surfaced was the notion of presence. I repeated it daily as a mantra: 1) I desire to be present to my life and not just sleepwalk through it. 2) I want to give my life, appropriately, as a present to the world. 3) I will attend to and articulate the Presence of the Sacred in the world. 4) And, I want to be responsibly present in my chosen relationships. There were two more pieces; but I will save "lean into my playful curiosity," and "let the love in," for another article. Presence. It can be hard work for grown-ups. It may be easier to cling to the nostalgia of glory days, or the grief of what is gone, than it is to be present today. It may be simpler to day dream about the future and live in the "if only," than to be present this moment. All of the above was my daily prayer. It still is. I pray it for our new deacons, too. On August 10, during the morning worship service, we will ordain Cyndi Vander Ven, David Cook, and Jane Lamkin. Also, Rev. Becky Shoaf, who already is ordained, along with Susan Pearson and Tim Getsay, will join the Diaconate. Deacons are "relationship attenders." Like their biblical counterparts, their role is to live as servants amongst us graciously and prayerfully. The church has asked them to walk alongside our lives, as we live our lives in the presence of God and one another. Human life has plenty of ups and downs, pratfalls and pick-ups, births and deaths. So we pray for our deacons as they pray for us and care about us. Welcome Cyndi, David, Aunt Jane, Becky, Tim, and Susan. Already you are a gift...a present...from God. |

Mike's Memos "The Soaring Spirit" Red spheres dotted the horizon as the children squinted, laughed, and pointed upwards at their balloons soaring into the Pentecost Sunday sky. Pentecost celebrates the birthday of the Church and it was quite a celebration. The children, youth, and their families began the Pentecost parade that morning by waving rings wrapped in red, yellow, and orange ribbons during the processional at the beginning of worship. Then the kids gathered for the Time with Children and eagerly listened as I told them about the importance of th e color red as the symbol of a fiery spirit and the power of the Holy Spirit as God's breath into a lifeless Christian community turning it into a living Church. Then, after the worship service, we gathered on the steps at the entrance of the Narthex with our red balloons grasped in tiny hands. We thanked God for the gift of the Holy Spirit, the love of Christ in our lives, and the power of God in NDBC and the Christian community. We then yelled "Happy Birthday!" and released our balloons into the warm Pentecost air. Our wonderful children are the perfect symbol for the life we experience at NDBC. Their presence in worship makes my spirit soar, just as it should on Pentecost Sunday.

Missions Corner
From the Touching Taliaferro with Love Mission Team
THANK YOU to the Meeks, Konenkamps, and Rhonda Harris for sharing your Lake Oconee homes with the Taliaferro County mission team. Your generosity provided tired workers with serene settings where we could revive our spirits and bodies in preparation for another day with 55 very active children. We sincerely appreciate your valuable contribution to the success of the 2014 Touching Taliaferro with Love mission trip.

MISSION OPPORTUNITY
On August 16, at 7 PM, the church has an opportunity to help serve a meal at the Barbara J. Crofton Women's Shelter. The shelter is located near the square in Marietta and houses 20-25 women who are working on their recovery from alcohol or drugs. It takes about an hour to ready the food to be served and then to eat with the ladies. I can't tell you what a blessing it is to sit down with them and share a meal and hear some of their stories. If you are interested in helping give Susan Harlan a call at 770-377-3869.

Energy: We are lowering our utility expenses by moving into the Chapel this summer. This expression of stewardship is environmentally responsible.
Intimacy: The Chapel is the church's original Sanctuary built in 1954; for many members, it is coming home. Also, the space encourages a close, friendly atmosphere.
Hymnody: The choir is taking a summer sabbatical (so as to return rested in the fall), so we will be singing new and familiar hymnody from our hymnal, The Worshiping Church.
