Pastoral Reflections By Rev. James Lamkin"Heilsgeschichte Y'all" As the biblical writers wrote history, their goal was not to offer an itemized chronology of the universe's beginnings. Nor was their objective to measure the temperature of the burning bush. Nor did they need to document the water depth through which the Hebrew slaves walked while exiting Egypt. It was not history they wanted to record, it was holy history. It was salvation history. German theologians of the previous century had a word for this: heilsgeschichte. Unlike we who live life without much awareness of God's hidden presence, the biblical writers saw all of life as God-soaked. Why did the cosmos come into being? God did it. Why did the plagues come to benefit the Hebrews and burden the Egyptians...with boatloads of bugs, frogs, and pelting hail? God did it. God creates. God redeems. God saves. And stories about God's work are a special kind of history: salvation history...heilsgeschichte. This is in my job description. My vocation is to watch for God at work; and then tell the story. The YMCA has a wonderful exercise pool. The local wellness clinic offers blood pressure screening. Goodwill does a lot of good. But the church...the church may do many of the same tasks, but we do them in Jesus' name. We do them with prayer and awareness and hope that God is present in what we do with our lives. Holy history continues to be written. I didn't exactly say those words to Northminster Church in Monroe, LA, last Sunday; but, in a way, I did. Like Jesus talking with the woman at the well, I told them their own story. Their story began with the pain of disenchantment with "church." Their story included worship for several years as squatters in the local synagogue. Their story seeped into the wet mortar of their new sanctuary which remembers both Latin anthems and Gospel songs. Their history is bigger than their history, because God is in their history. God is part of NDBC holy history. I pray for eyes to see and to imagine what God might be up to, and then chronicle it. Feel free to job-share with me. Listen for God in the congregation's a cappela singing of a hymn's third stanza. Watch for God in the stumbling migration of children to the chancel each week to sit at Mike's feet. Taste God's forgiveness in a communion wafer (even if it's stale), or in the cheese 'n sausage grits brought to a Church School Kick-Off Breakfast, or in funeral food nourishing a grieving family more than pious words ever could. As I flew back to Atlanta on Sunday night, I gave thanks to God for including you and me in Northside Drive's salvation history. It is obvious in your faces every week. 'Tis a holy journey we are on. Heilsgeschichte y'all. |

Summer Worship in the Chapel
Energy, Intimacy, & Hymnody
July 6-August 31, 2014
Energy: We are lowering our utility expenses by moving into the Chapel this summer. This expression of stewardship is environmentally responsible.
Intimacy: The Chapel is the church's original Sanctuary built in 1954; for many members, it is coming home. Also, the space encourages a close, friendly atmosphere.
Hymnody: The choir is taking a summer sabbatical (so as to return rested in the fall), so we will be singing new and familiar hymnody from our hymnal, The Worshiping Church.

NDBC Women's Spiritual Retreat
It's time to sign up! We have a wonderful leader and a topic that speaks to all busy women who spend so much time serving others; you need time away to refresh yourself, to remember God and the person God made you to be. Grab a friend from NDBC or outside the congregation or come on your own. You will be personally nourished and feel more connected than ever to the strong, faithful, fun-loving women of our church. We welcome everyone...except men. Sorry.
NDBC Women's Spiritual Retreat 2014
BE STILL AND KNOW:
LISTENING FOR GOD IN THE MIDST OF LIFE
We all long to be refreshed, but busy complex lives distract us from the voice of God. How can we be more mindful of God's faithful presence with us and the inherent holiness of life? Join us for our Women's Spiritual Retreat where we will have the opportunity to encounter ancient and modern spiritual practices. Explore and learn with our community of faith-filled women and on your own in an inviting natural setting. Let your sacred curiosity and grounding be enlarged as God invites holy aliveness in each person in both rest and activity, in both silence and sound. Perhaps there is a new way of LISTENING AND SEEING awaiting you.
Our retreat facilitator, Barbara Dolan Meinert, D.Min., is a spiritual director/companion with 30 years' experience in this calling she loves. A mother of three and grandmother of seven, she feels blessed to journey spiritually with individuals and groups and to conduct retreats and workshops.
