NORTHSIDE NOTES: July 09, 2014
Pastoral Reflections
By Rev. James Lamkin

"Taliaferro County 2014...

A Retrospective"

"The church exists by mission like a fire exists by burning." German theologian, Emil Brunner, said that.

Brunner was right. This is one reason why NDBC's missions in Taliaferro County are important. Our very existence as a church depends on it.

Oh sure, we do some good in Jesus' name. Oh sure, the children and families to whom we minister seem appreciative. Oh sure, we come bearing resources and they come bearing needs.

Also, it is the other way around. Being with them does us a lot of good.

Birthed years ago as a ministry of the CBF of Georgia, Touching Taliaferro with Love (TTWL) began as a partnership with the poorest, smallest, and least resourced county in the state. For the past nine years, NDBC has joined in to help; and Taliaferro has joined our hearts, as well.

The way I see it, we are not so much Touching Taliaferro with Love, as we are Touched by Taliaferro's Love! They gift us. They let us be our playful, anxious, caring, faithful, selves. By doing so, I think every Northside Driver who goes, grows. We come back more loving, more playful, more caring, and maybe a little less anxious.

If, "The church exists by mission as a fire exists by burning," then the NDBC missioners who go fan the flame annually.

I grow not tired of bragging. Our mission bunch is a Seal Team for Jesus. You could drop them out of a low-flying aircraft and they'd have a mission Bible school up and running by the time they hit the ground. Plus, they bring enough stuff (crayons, books, tablets, costumes, balloons, Bibles, and memory verses) to fill a C-130.

The NDBCers who went this year were: Barbara, James, Syd, Letty, Kendall, Lora, Susan R., Susan D., Susan H., Beth, Jada, Kay, Rhonda, Pam, Gloria, Tristan, Terrell, Alyssa, and Virginia. Plus, the Meeks and Konenkamps and Rhonda Harris, made their lake houses available for our lodging, lounging, and war room strategies. Perfect.

Amazed am I at how our Mission Team learns each of these kid's name. There is an occasional James and Joseph, Michelle and Alexandria; but there also is Ze'Keiyah, NyAndria, Datejah, Jakzious and Endeyah...to name a few.

NDBC's mission statement says, "We believe that hands-on missions are crucial to our own discipleship, as well as the mission of Christ in the world."

Indeed, if the church exists by mission as a fire exists by burning, then no wonder we don't just survive, we thrive.

Thanks be to God for the missions community within NDBC. They are keepers of the flame.

Intimacy: The Chapel is the church's original Sanctuary built in 1954; for many members, it is coming home. Also, the space encourages a close, friendly atmosphere.

Hymnody: The choir is taking a summer sabbatical (so as to return rested in the fall), so we will be singing new and familiar hymnody from our hymnal, The Worshiping Church.

NDBC Women's Spiritual Retreat

It's time to sign up! We have a wonderful leader and a topic that speaks to all busy women who spend so much time serving others; you need time away to refresh yourself, to remember God and the person God made you to be. Grab a friend from NDBC or outside the congregation or come on your own. You will be personally nourished and feel more connected than ever to the strong, faithful, fun-loving women of our church. We welcome everyone...except men. Sorry.

NDBC Women's Spiritual Retreat 2014

BE STILL AND KNOW:

LISTENING FOR GOD IN THE MIDST OF LIFE

We all long to be refreshed, but busy complex lives distract us from the voice of God. How can we be more mindful of God's faithful presence with us and the inherent holiness of life? Join us for our Women's Spiritual Retreat where we will have the opportunity to encounter ancient and modern spiritual practices. Explore and learn with our community of faith-filled women and on your own in an inviting natural setting. Let your sacred curiosity and grounding be enlarged as God invites holy aliveness in each person in both rest and activity, in both silence and sound. Perhaps there is a new way of LISTENING AND SEEING awaiting you.

Our retreat facilitator, Barbara Dolan Meinert, D.Min., is a spiritual director/companion with 30 years' experience in this calling she loves. A mother of three and grandmother of seven, she feels blessed to journey spiritually with individuals and groups and to conduct retreats and workshops.
