Pastoral Reflections By Rev. James Lamkin "What Do You Hear from Liz?" Many times a week, I get kind inquiries as to how we are doing with Liz's big adventure. Thank you for your TLC for me up-close and for Liz at a distance. She is at the ten week mark in her six month deployment. We get to talk to each other about four or five days a week. The following is a beautiful story. Through it, you can eavesdrop on one facet what she's up to: Donations Come with Strings Attached written by Senior Master Sgt. Eric Peterson. A shipment of 18 brand-new acoustic guitars arrived in perfect working condition to the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing at an undisclosed location in Southwest Asia, June 4, 2014. The guitars were donated by a United States musical instrument retailer to the members of the 380th AEW. Chapel staff and mental health office members unboxed and inventoried the guitars shortly after they were delivered. Senior Airman Jeremy Cole was the first to try out his guitar-playing skills on the new instruments. He pulled a red-colored guitar out of the box, tuned each of the six strings and began strumming chord progressions. "They played well, right out of the box," said Air Force Maj. Benjamin Carter, clinical psychologist and chief of the mental health clinic. Plans are now being developed to make the new guitars available for use by all interested military service personnel at the wing. "I was asked to help make a distribution plan with other supporting agencies for the well-being of our Airmen and Soldiers," said 380th AEW Chaplain Lt. Col. Elizabeth Harris-Lamkin. A number of the guitars will be distributed to the community activities center, the mental health office and to the Army battalions on base. Several guitars will remain at the chapel to be used in services and to be made available for check out. "This is particularly timely because we were just talking about the need for alternative activities for people who have different skills and talents, who may not enjoy basketball or sitting by the pool necessarily," said Carter. "The opportunity to work on those talents is something that helps achieve some balance while you're deployed and away from some of the other beneficial things that you might be participating in back home." Guitar classes may even be offered if instructors can be found to teach the guitar basics to any of the aspiring musicians on base. "We have many folks who are accomplished musicians, so we are going to exploring who may be available to offer some beginning guitar lessons," said Chaplain Harris-Lamkin. |

Touching Taliaferro with Love June 15-20, 2014 It's time to sign up for our summer mission trip! Since 2007, Northside Drive has led a week of Vacation Bible School/summer camp in Taliaferro County, one of the poorest and most neglected areas of Georgia. Supported through individual churches and the Georgia Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, TTWL provides summer camp activities for children in first through fifth grades. If you can tell a Bible story, direct a craft activity, lead in recreation, or guide a group of lively children from one activity room to another, then there is a place for you to share your talents and love with the children in Taliaferro County. While it's great to have volunteers who participate all five days, you are welcome for any amount of time that fits your work or family schedule. For more information contact Susan Harlan, Rhonda Harris, or Barbara Atchley. |

Special sessions are held early in the week, and the general meeting begins Wednesday evening with a Celebration of Co-Missioning. "I am a Rural Poverty Advocate, working with individuals and families in crisis, including the homeless, victims of domestic violence and families in financial and medical crisis." Drawing on local assets, Scarlette assists families with financial counseling, job readiness skills, and applications for benefits and services. Scarlette also coaches individuals and families to meet emotional and spiritual needs through classes, counseling referrals, and Bible study.
A special part of the week will be the worship service led by NDBC on Friday, June 27, 2:45-3:45 PM. You are invited to participate in this service.

Summer Worship in the Chapel
Energy, Intimacy, & Hymnody
July 6-August 31, 2014
Energy: We are lowering our utility expenses by moving into the Chapel this summer. This expression of stewardship is environmentally responsible.
Intimacy: The Chapel is the church's original Sanctuary built in 1954; for many members, it is coming home. Also, the space encourages a close, friendly atmosphere.
Hymnody: The choir is taking a summer sabbatical (so as to return rested in the fall), so we will be singing new and familiar hymnody from our hymnal, The Worshiping Church.
